Evolution, by Stephen Baxter

Stretching from the distant past into the remote future, from primordial Earth to the stars, Evolution is a soaring symphony of struggle, extinction, and survival; a dazzling epic that combines a dozen scientific disciplines and a cast of unforgettable characters to convey the grand drama of evolution in all its awesome majesty and rigorous beauty. Sixty-five million years ago, when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, there lived a small mammal, a proto-primate of the species Purgatorius. From this humble beginning, Baxter traces the human lineage forward through time. The adventure that unfolds is a gripping odyssey governed by chance and competition, a perilous journey to an uncertain destination along a route beset by sudden and catastrophic upheavals. It is a route that ends, for most species, in stagnation or extinction. Why should humanity escape this fate?

Amazon.com Review
Following up his cosmic Manifold series, Stephen Baxter peers back on a more prosaic history in the worthy yet uneven Evolution. The book is nothing less than a novelization of human evolution, a mega-Michener treatment of 65 million years starring a host of smart, furry primates representing Homo sapiens's ancestry. Each stage of our ancestry is represented by a character of progressively increasing intelligence, empathy, and brain size, who must survive predation and other perils long enough to keep the natural-selection ball rolling. While Baxter carefully follows some widely accepted theories of evolution--punctuated equilibrium, for instance--he also strays from the known in postulating air whales and sentient, tool-wielding dinosaurs. And why not? There's nothing in the fossil record to contradict his musings about those things, or about the first instances of mammalian altruism and deception, which he also lets us observe. From little Purga, a shrewlike mammal scurrying under the feet of ankylosaurs, all the way through Ultimate, the last human descendant, Baxter adds drama and a strong story arc to our past and future. But he spends too much time on details of the various prehumans' lives, which can become repetitive: fight, mate, die, ad infinitum. And readers eager for a science-fictional adventure will only find satisfaction in the posthuman chapters at the end. Despite these flaws, Evolution grips the attention with an epoch-spanning tale of the random changes that rule our genetic heritage. Recommended. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Taking a page from SF saga writers like Kim Stanley Robinson and Brian Stableford, British author Baxter (the Manifold trilogy) portrays humanity's origins, growth and ultimate disappearance in a loose-knit series of brutal vignettes spanning millions of years of evolution. Beginning with the gritty slice-of-life tale of a small, ratlike proto-primate called Purga (short for species Purgatorius), the story travels from the end of the Cretaceous through the millennia as primates slowly evolve into creatures more and more recognizably human, learning to make and use tools, developing language and the ability to feel empathy-the trait that Baxter selects as definitive of true humanity. Resonating with that theme, the vignettes are linked by a thin near-future frame about scientists meeting in the midst of ecological and political chaos to find a way to save humanity from itself through the "globalization of empathy." More concerned with technical detail than character or plot, the book rises above its fragmented narrative and frequently repetitive violence to reach a grim and stoic grandeur, which (despite a tendency toward preachiness) clearly has humanity's best interests at heart. Here is a rigorously constructed hard SF novel where the question is not whether humanity will reach the stars but how it will survive its own worst tendencies.
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Baxter's new novel is a sprawling, ambitious chronicle spanning millennia, from the first rodent-like ancestors of humanity to the strange remnants of life on a dessicated, dying Earth. The most satisfying fragments of it are the most speculative, such as the glimmerings of curiosity in the dinosaur mind and the bizarre symbiosis Baxter projects for the evolutionary descendants of humans. Baxter traces direct lines of descent, at first merely by sequences of birth but later by the progression of names and legends--procedures conducive to an immense perspective. Most of the beings who figure here, even the huge-eyed shrews of the Cretaceous, are humans' ancestors. The account of the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction and the rise of mammals as the dominant life-form is particularly fascinating, not least because of Baxter's clever use of human empathy to conjure personality and motivation for animal protagonists. Similarly well crafted is Baxter's projection of a posthuman future, including a great decline of species diversity and life on Earth in general--a tour-de-force prognostication of further strange means for survival. Recommend for those who love to learn through stories
By David G. Phillips
I have been an ambassador for this book since I first started reading it - I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it, especially the vignette stories that lead up to our species as it exists today. I wanted to share a quote from the book that gives me chills to this day:

"Then he turned back to the savannah. He was bipedal, tool wielding, meat eating, xenophobic, hierarchal, combative, competitive - all of which he had brought from the forest - and yet he was imbued with the best qualities of his ancestors, with Purga's doggedness, Noth's exuberance, Roamer's courage, even Capo's vision. Full of possibilities of the future, laden with the relics of the past, the young male, standing upright, gazed at the open plain." - Stephen Baxter, Evolution (novel)

Fascinating, it inspired me to learn more on the subject
By Norbert Haupt
Evolution is a novel of over 640 pages that was not an easy read, but superbly inspiring and thought-provoking. Reading Evolution was time extremely well spent, I learned immeasurably from it, and I am not yet done learning.

Evolution, while it is termed a novel, is not really a novel. Critics have blasted it as a series of short stories, loosely connected. A novel has a protagonist, a theme, and a plot that creates suspense which keeps the reader turning the pages. This book has none of that. The only motivator that keeps turning the pages of Evolution is an intense interest in the subject of the book. Evolution is not really a novel, but rather speculative natural history fiction.

Some reviewers of one star on Amazon blasted Baxter for this book. They ridiculed his science, the plausibility of the events and the structure and approach of the book. I think they are missing the point. Baxter is fully aware of the fact that he sometimes picked one of several conflicting scientific theories or premises and ran with it. There is a lot of speculation on what might have happened, and what might happen in the future, but it is mostly plausible at a minimum, often surprising or startling, and sometimes outright stunning.

Spoiler warning: I am going to talk about some details that might be considered spoilers, but I don't think they will take away anything from the enjoyment of the book at all, but rather, I think they might help inspire you to pick it up and read it yourself.

The main story starts in the Jurassic period. Baxter describes what the world might have been like during the height of the reign of the dinosaurs 145 million years ago. He describes the interactions of the various species of dinosaurs, those we know something about from the fossil record, and some that he outright made up. One of those made up speculative species is an "air whale", a pterosaur with a wingspan of over 100 feet that spends its entire life gliding and soaring in the stratosphere. Another is related to a type of raptor of about human size that had evolved as a hunter with intelligence advanced enough to make simple tools, like leather belts, leather whips and spears. I thought that was fascinating. There is no reason why such a species could not have become sophisticated enough 145 million years ago to make simple tools. As long as they didn't make stone tools that would last, there would be no fossil trace left today and we'd never know. Had the Yucatan impact 65 million years ago not happened, such a species might have continued on as the dominant intelligence on the planet, and produced advanced technology in the dinosaur realm. We mammals might never have existed.

The main story really begins with the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Some scientists think the extinction took a few thousand years, some think a few years, and Baxter takes the view that it took no more than a few days to wipe out almost all the dinosaurs, making room for a small rat-like mammal called purgatorius. Some scientists speculate that this animal, due to its primate-like teeth may be the most distant ancestor of all monkeys, apes, hominids and yes, eventually humans. The book spends some time following these various animals in their environment, describes their surroundings and their challenges, before turning the clock forward to the next epoch.

In this manner, Baxter leads us closer to humanity one step at a time, up to the present, and then beyond. There were many extinction events in the history of the earth, and one is going on right now, where right now is defined to be the last 15,000 years up to now. Man has edged out many other species of man-like creatures over the past 100,000 years, but also apparently caused the extinction of many types of large mammals wherever man appears, including in the Americas and in Australia.

As Baxter ventures into the future, he does it in increasingly large steps. First he steps forward by a few thousand years. Then 30 million, then 500 million years. What happens to humans in his speculation is surprising. Humans devolve back, losing their intelligence, and they split into many different subspecies again, some giant elephantine creatures, other blind mole-like burrow dwellers, and yet others tree species like our ancestors. While some critics found that part of the book hard to swallow, I must admit I was fascinated by the implications.

Reading through the prehistoric times I found myself sometimes frustrated by descriptions Baxter used to "show" what a purgatorius looked like, and a notharctus, and so on for dozens of now extinct animals. I wished there were illustrations to help with the imagery. Then I realized I could just get the appropriate books. I obtained Ice Age Mammals of North America by Ian M. Lange and National Geographic Prehistoric Mammals by Alan Turner, illustrated by Mauricio Anton. I also picked up The Evidence of Evolution by Alan R. Rogers. While I would never before have looked at these books, now every picture, every description, was eminently interesting. I found myself checking out the various animals, their time periods, and the circumstances of their reigns, and how they became extinct. I know so much more about natural history than I did before, and I have already concluded that it's time for me to go to a few museums of natural history as soon as possible to round out the experience.

All this interest and learning was sparked by a simple novel called Evolution that really is not a novel, but rather a speculation on natural history.

educational SciFi
By jerknowsall
I read this book on a Kindle. It probably should have been entitled The Thread or The Strand because of the DNA linking the chapters. It was fascinating if a little overly imaginative toward the end. I'm not a fan of fantasy and this ScyFi book seemed to be mostly believable The organization of the book reminded me of Michener's "The Source", which is also a book worth reading.

Amazon.com Review
Life lessons? Romance? Literary instruction? Go, Dog. Go! offers all this and more, wrapped up in one simply worded, warmly hued package. Using single-syllable words in rhythmic repetition, and introducing colors and prepositions, this Seuss-styled classic has been an early favorite of children since 1961. For those looking for deeper meaning in a beginning reader book, here you'll find nothing less than a microcosm of life. Green dogs, yellow dogs, big dogs, little dogs. Dogs who prefer cars, dogs who favor skis. All represent the diversity a child will find in the world. And the slow-to-bud romance between the cheerfully oblivious yellow dog and the mincing pink poodle explains more succinctly than most self-help books what goes on in many grown-up relationships. Nonetheless, Eastman takes the concept of "primary" to heart, with his simple silly phrases and solidly colored illustrations. Not only will this book inspire peals of laughter in kids, it will also help them make the magical connection between those mysterious black squiggles on the page, and the words they hear and speak. (Ages 4 to 8)

Great book in both editions
By Jim in Georgia
Some of these ratings seem to be based on confusion over the different versions of the book that are available. Here's a breakdown.

For the full-size with all original content, make sure you are ordering the "I Can Read It All By Myself, Beginner Books" edition. This is the version we just ordered and received for my toddler, and it is exactly what we expected/wanted.

The "(Big Bright & Early Board Book) Board book" edition is smaller, very much abridged, and all the pages are cardboard stock. This version is for younger babies.

Both versions are great - just for different purposes/ages. When my 2 year old was a baby up through just recently, we would read him the board book edition, or he would flip through it himself, and he loved it. It was perfect for his then-shorter attention span. We just recently ordered and received the full version, and it is perfect for him now. As a bonus of starting him on the board book version, while he loved it, he was SO excited to see the additional content when we first showed him the full edition.

This is a simplified version, NOT the original
By Sarah Spikes
This is not the version of the book that I read (over and over) as a kid. It is heavily simplified. The back even says "Classics made simpler and sturdier for younger readers". I get the desire to do this, but I was very disappointed not to receive the book I thought I was getting for my friend's daughter. (It doesn't even have a single instance of the repeated "Do you like my hat?" dialogue that made the original version of this book so distinctive in my memory.)

I mainly just wish that it had been possible to tell from the description of the product that this did not contain all of the original text and pictures, so that I would've known to buy a different version.

Color issues
By Sarah and Micah Battaglia
This is my little one's favorite book! So when her copy got left out in the rain we had to replace it. I have recieved 3 different copies of this book trying to get one that looks the way it should with no luck. The colors are off as you can see in the pictures. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal but when you are reading to a toddler and tell them the stop light is red but really it's orange that can be pretty confusing. It appears that during the printing process something happened to the red pigment. All the red/orange colors are wrong. I compared the colors of the board book to the regular book so you can see what it should look like. I'm disappointed and a bit annoyed with the whole ordeal. We will be returning the book (for the 3rd time) and purchasing it from somewhere else.

Grammar for Middle School: A Sentence-Composing Approach--A Student Worktext, by Jenny Killgallon, Donald Killgallon

Don and Jenny Killgallon's sentence-composing approach has transformed how writing is taught in thousands of language arts classes, helping students all across America become more proficient, sophisticated writers. Now the Killgallons use their highly effective method for a unique, powerful textbook that links good writing to that perennially difficult-to-teach subject-grammar.

Grammar for Middle School: A Sentence-Composing Approach gives your students the chance to absorb and replicate the grammatical structures used by some of the best writers of our times. Included among the over 150 authors, 200 titles, and 400 model sentences in Grammar for Middle School are award-winning young-adult literature such as Cynthia Voigt's Homecoming, popular favorites like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, and curricular staples such as John Steinbeck's The Red Pony and The Pearl.

Fourteen grammatical structures are developed in the same predictable, understandable manner, using the sentence-composing approach. When students first encounter a tool, it is clearly defined and characterized. Then it's practiced through five activities: matching, unscrambling, combining, imitating, and expanding. Finally, a creative writing activity immerses students in the composition or revision of a paragraph through independent use of the sentence-composing tools they have already learned. Best of all, after each section, review activities-which can be easily graded as unit or final tests-offer opportunities for students to bring it all together and build better sentences.

An online teacher's guide accompanies Grammar for Middle School and includes advice, tips, resources, answer keys, and even curricular plans for teachers who are either new to the Killgallon approach or sentence-composing veterans. Visit Heinemann online to access the downloadable teacher's booklet.

No one can forge the link between grammar and writing like Don and Jenny Killgallon. Discover for yourself or rediscover how powerful the sentence-composing approach can be, and watch as your students get grammar like never before-and write better sentences too.

This book provides a creative way to get students to recognize the importance and impact of sentence variety. I haven't used it in class yet, but I read through it this summer, and I'm anxious to use it once I know the foundational grammar concepts are set.

I was so excited to purchase this book, along with Paragraphs for Middle School. Sadly, there was no online teacher's guide as promised in the product description. I could understand omitting it if the book was used, but it was new. Any chance of supplying it?

wish I had this when I started my class!
By Suriah
This book is perfect, at least for me. It goes through ON grammar exactly the way I need to see it in order to learn it. Our teacher didn't require this book, but used some examples from it. After looking at the examples I went straight out and ordered the book. This type of grammar instruction probably isn't for everyone, but it made it so much easier for me to understand and learn the structures. I only wish I had it from the beginning of the class, I think I would have done much better!

Very Thorough Grammar
By JamyangNorbu
This text is very useful as a descriptive grammar of the Old Norse language. If paired with a graded reading course like Graded Readings and Exercises in Old Icelandic by Kenneth Chapman, or the second volume of this series, it should additionally be useful to students interested in gaining reading knowledge of Old Norse.

Amazon.com Review
Dorling Kindersly publishing is known for their beautiful and informative books, covering a huge range of topics, including science and nature. This DK insect handbook's lush photos and thorough information make it an excellent beginning resource for the insectophile. While not comprehensive enough to replace an entomology handbook, and not specific enough to be a perfect field guide, Insects rests comfortably in the handbook territory. Its sturdy binding and quick reference features make it a natural to take along on family outings. Each page is lavished with full-color photo layouts showing close-up detail of major insect and arachnid groups, and the accompanying text provides basic information on life cycles, ranges, special habits and features, and trivia. The author, George C. McGavin, is a respected entomologist specializing in insect ecology. For quick identification of major bugs and arachnids, as well as tips on how to observe terrestrial arthropods in nature, this handbook can't be beat. --Therese Littleton

A great overview of insects
By A Customer
This book has a lot of useful information about insects. It describes basic characteristics, life cycle, and much more. It also includes info on other terrestrial arthropods, such as spiders and centipedes. As a field guide, it focuses on families of insects, not species, which makes more sense because there are so many species that are hard to identify. There are great photographs and descritions as well.

Great guide--teach yourself to identify most insect families
By Ms. WB
This is really a nicely done guide and almost fits in my coat pocket. The pictures are fabulous and the insects are divided up into their respective families with very clear identifying traits. I'm really impressed, so much easy-to-use information in such a small book. This would be a great precursor to an entomology class. Some of my favorite critters are in the Psuedoscorpion order and are the cheliferids and chernetids, both of which look like tiny ticks with claws. So very cool. I actually found one once in Washington state--in my kitchen! It was very, very tiny. I digress. A book like this is handy if you are always finding insects and wondering what the heck you are looking at. A good value!

Mixed Feelings
By Gloops
Mixed feelings about this handbook. It gives an excellent introduction to an enormous subject, and provides a manageable overview using Linnaean taxonomy (family tree), within its 250 pages. Its illustrations are clear and detailed and in glorious colour. Many of the bugs are absolutely beautiful.

However, it recognises its own limitations by saying "... impossible to include [all 1500 families of terrestrial arthropods] in this book. We have chosen a broad range from around the world, including [those that] are particularly important, common or simply fascinating in some way".

As a result, if you really need something to identify the creatures in the area where you live, then this handbook won't get you very far. For example, the entire world's Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are dealt with in 20 pages and the Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) in only 5. Compare this with, say, the 84 and 21 pages respectively (out of a total of 320) in Bob Gibbons' "Field Guide to Insects of Britain and Northern Europe", which I found to be of much more practical use, simply because its scope is geographically far less ambitious. The Gibbons book won't help US readers, I know, but the comparison is likely to be true for any good quality LOCAL field guide.

The DK/Smithsonian production is attractive and eye-catching, and could very well spark a youngster's interest in the subject, but it is probably more suited to the coffee table than to the field and the garden.

A quick guide. I liked it
By Dr
I am currently watching a documentary on the Galápagos Islands and bought this little guide to see what it is like.
At the back is a stylised map with the different islands and where you are likely to see what wild life-- I liked the map and its information.
The guide is a number of illustrations per page of mainly Reptiles and Birds. The illustrations are in colour and reasonable.
You are told the name of the creature and its length or height.
One pointer for identification may be given.
The birds are males ,usually in breeding plumage
Some will like this little work, others not.
I personally liked it ( I wouldn't use it as my only guide to the Galápagos Wildlife )
For me it filled a need for quick identification.
I think it is worth the money

Compact with outstanding, colorful illustrations
By Jane M.
When I was in the Galapagos I used this every day. When I came home and made a photo album I referred to it constantly for my commentary on which bird or animal was which. It's so convenient because it's so compact and lightweight. It holds up well because it's laminated. For a serious birder, it might not be quite adequate. I'm not in that category so it was perfect for me. I just wanted the basics and there was nothing I couldn't find.

Great amount of info and water-resistant, too.
By Carol Rolnick
A pretty comprehensive, fold-out guide to the most common wildlife in the Galapagos. It's water-resistant, which is good for those who will be snorkeling or diving. One whole side is devoted to birds, which is great considering the numbers and diversity of species among the islands. For most travelers, this is probably sufficient if you're with a good naturalist guide.

Marfa Modern: Artistic Interiors of the West Texas High Desert, by Helen Thompson

Twenty-one houses in and around Marfa, Texas, provide a glimpse at creative life and design in one of the art world’s most intriguing destinations.

When Donald Judd began his Marfa project in the early 1970s, it was regarded as an idiosyncratic quest. Today, Judd is revered for his minimalist art and the stringent standards he applied to everything around him, including interiors, architecture, and furniture. The former water stop has become a mecca for artists, art pilgrims, and design aficionados drawn to the creative enclave, the permanent installations called “among the largest and most beautiful in the world,” and the austerely beautiful high-desert landscape.

In keeping with Judd’s site-specific intentions, those who call Marfa home have made a choice to live in concert with their untamed, open surroundings. Marfa Modern features houses that represent unique responses to this setting—the sky, its light and sense of isolation—some that even predate Judd’s arrival.

Here, conceptual artist Michael Phelan lives in a former Texaco service station with battery acid stains on the concrete floor and a twenty-foot dining table lining one wall. A chef’s modest house comes with the satisfaction of being handmade down to its side tables and bath, which expands into a private courtyard with an outdoor tub. Another artist uses the many rooms of her house, a former jail, to shift between different mediums—with Judd’s Fort D. A. Russell works always visible from her second-story sun porch.

Extraordinary building costs mean that Marfa dwellers embrace a culture of frontier ingenuity and freedom from excess—salvaged metal signs become sliding doors and lengths of pipe become lighting fixtures, industrial warehouses are redesigned after the area’s white-cube galleries to create space for private or personally created art collections, and other materials are suggested by the land itself: walls are made of adobe bricks or rammed earth to form sculptural courtyards, or, in one remarkable instance, a mix of mud and brick plastered with local soils, cactus mucilage, horse manure, and straw.

Review
"This book of modern interiors captures both the unique sense of place and the vibrant artistic community of Marfa, Texas, a mecca for art pilgrims, design aficionados, and international hipsters. The idea of 'a place where the demand to live for art is so compelling as to be unavoidable' might sound hyperbolic, but when readers see how these residents live, they'll understand."
—Publishers Weekly

"Each of 21 houses showcases a different response to the landscape—from artful transformations of a former service station and a onetime jail to new builds with 360-degree views. Helen Thompson's brightly knowledgeable tone makes her a welcome guide, but Casey Dunn's 200 photos prove that the least expensive material—the light—remains key to each project's success."
—Interiors

"Marfa has grown to be an enclave for artists, chefs, hoteliers, and forward-thinking entrepreneurs. Helen Thompson describes the architecture as intensely personal, an oddball mix of funky vibes with ultra-modern art: 'Each home is a site-specific construction that exists in the spirit of Judd's command to make art suit its space. In the best sense, the thoughtful creatives who have settled lately in Marfa carry on the tradition of Marfa as Donald Judd saw it—as a place where the demand to live for art is unavoidable and compelling.'"

Something For All Web Surfers; Something For All Firefox Developers
By Robert L. Cochran
I have a little sideline in repairing computers, and one day a customer asked if I could help him recover all his bookmarks from the installed Mozilla version he had on his old hard drive and move them to the one on his new hard drive. Hack 25 in this book, "Migrate Firefox Profiles", told me what to do since Firefox is based on the Mozilla code base. Over several more days, I referred to other hacks in this book to guide the customer with greater skill. This book made me look like a greater expert than I really am -- which pleases me.

This is just one of several times I have quickly reached for Firefox Hacks in order to rescue either a customer or myself. It is very common for customers to want to migrate their browser data. Some consider it important enough to pay for my help to get that job done. Browsers are the most important unit of software on the internet. Buying this book is a good investment in working with Firefox as a tool.

For myself, I'm interested in the fonts I can use (Hacks 30, "Insall Fonts and Character Support", and 61, "Make MathML Content"), reviewing the basics (Hacks 1-10) and installation (Hacks 22 through 32.) I want to play with Scalable Vector Graphics which are now natively supported in Firefox 1.5. I never tire of rendering the cubic spline tiger on Croczilla: [...]

If you want to develop with Firefox (and Nigel McFarlane has written a related book on Mozilla development). check out the getting-started Hack 93, "Make Firefox Software". Enjoy the thrill of compiling your own flavor of Firefox.

My point is that Firefox Hacks has something for everyone. If you are just starting with web browing, look at Hacks 1 through 10. I learned something from most of these -- and I thought I was an expert web surfer. If you want to do deep development, refer to the "Work More Closely With Firefox" hacks in Chapter 9. Yes, I have compiled the Mozilla browser many times. If you just want to be able to play around, pick any hack in this book, read it closely, and then implement it for yourself. Go do it -- you won't be sorry.

I like McFarlane's way of describing each hack in detail rather than throwing code at you and using it to take up column-inches and pages of book space without telling you what that code really does and how to make it work. McFarlane has a gift for explaining exceedingly complex material in an easily digestible way. Every reader of this book will find at least a few hacks to zero in on and study closely. You will find that you have the careful explanation you need to make the hack understandable and workable, without being smothered with useless detail.

McFarlane cross-references and supports his hacks with other hacks and web page links for those who want to learn more. It is McFarlane's special strength that he can simplify the complex issues that come with web browsing and point you in the right direction, while actually getting you interested in some arcane bit of Firefox.

McFarlane has done an outstanding job of crafting this book. He is one of the best technical writers of our time and I am hopeful he will publish new books as well as update his existing work.

To wring the most out of Firefox as your web browser of choice, get Firefox Hacks.

The Missing Manual
By Jase T. Wolfe
I'll start this review with my conclusion: get this book. General users and network admins alike will find great benefit in this title. It is the missing manual that serves not only to introduce you to the product, but teach you the ins and outs of actually taking control of the browser and all of it's actions for not only yourself, but if your in a deployment position - for distribution to, and remote management of, others. Separated in to two parts, the entire text completes the FireFox picture for both developers and end users.

When it comes to how inclusive this title is, I'm not talking about the half-hearted attempts other like-books make for applications, where the reader is shocked to realize that 80% of it is graphical hand holding of the native menus and dialog boxes, rewording the tool-tips and associated help file when needed - this book really delivers. The first 100 pages are dedicated to making sure the reader understands the browser's makeup, understands, identifies, and can edit the configuration settings for native behaviors (quite often, when applicable, showing the one to one relationship with the graphical dialog or interface and the configuration setting), and setup / manage FireFox within a network environment. The remainder of the book deals popular browser extensions for both users and developers, CCS and DOM development, XML development, and the interaction with third-party tools and utilities one comes to expect from the "Hacks" series.

Don't think that just because FireFox is free and comes as trimmed down as possible, that there is nothing to it other than the obvious. A development goal was to make the browser's actions as transparent and accessible as possible, and the information available to the public. This title proves they succeeded, and you will find that this is the only book you will need to read to get the absolute most out of the browser.
