Engineering Information Security covers all aspects of information security using a systematic engineering approach and focuses on the viewpoint of how to control access to information. Unlike other books that focus on security mechanisms, threats, and vulnerabilities, this book presents a methodology for addressing security concerns in any organization. The methodology is based on a set of concepts that are designed to methodically examine, analyse, and document objectives, and the functional and performance capabilities that need to exist to achieve the stated goals.

This book begins by considering the importance of information security. Legal, technical, competitive, criminal, and consumer forces and influences that are rapidly changing our information dependent society are also discussed. Concepts of systems engineering are explored, as well as the value they provide to new products and services along with the maintenance and evolution to existing products and services. This book is very dated! It uses old terminology and makes references to terms and phrases, but fails to go in depth into those areas. Furthermore, context is poorly structured at times. This book appears to e written like a college essay rather than a professional textbook.

Mediocre is the best way to describe this resource

It's not bad however, I did not find the resource to be well organized. Content is all over the place. Early chapters are unnecessarily long and portions consist of many bullet lists. It gets tiring of reading list after list. Middle chapters focus on networking where some abbreviations are seemingly made up. The material should be broken up and presented in a consistent way. There are better ways of delivering the content. Last 3rd of the book is better and I do like the intro and summary sections.

In this follow-up to his cooking school odyssey, The Making of a Chef, Ruhlman examines what causes chefs to seek absolute perfection. The book is divided into three parts: in the first, Ruhlman observes the arduous Certified Master Chef exam at the Culinary Institute of America, which was the setting for his first book. The second segment focuses on Michael Symon, a rising star at Lola (in Cleveland) who was recently dubbed one of the 10 best chefs in America by Food & Wine. The third is dedicated to Thomas Keller, chef of California's esteemed French Laundry. While Ruhlman's play-by-play descriptions of chefs struggling to cook exactly as Escoffier dictated 90 years earlier can be exciting (and the stories of those who failed heartbreaking), they strongly echo his previous book's account of culinary education. The author fares better in his portrait of Keller's development into an exacting perfectionist. But even here Ruhlman often slips into simply writing about the process of working on The French Laundry Cookbook, to which he contributed the text, or repeating stories that appear in it. Overall this book makes a fine introduction to Ruhlman's writing, but readers of his previous books will be disappointed to find the chef reheating leftovers. (July)

Writer and trained chef Ruhlman (The Making of a Chef) claims to be searching for the essence of what drives a great chef. In 1997, he attended the Certified Master Chef exam at the Culinary Institute of America, the most grueling, comprehensive, and controversial cooking test in America. He observes and interviewed, among others, Bryan Polcyn of Five Lakes Grill in Michigan. Next he moved to Cleveland to report on another star chef, Michael Symon of the Lola Bistro and Wine Bar. The third section of his book concerns Thomas Keller of the French Laundry in the Napa Valley, called by many the best chef working in America today. Each section of the book is fascinating in itself, especially the introductory section on the Certified Master Chef exam, an ordeal of almost hellish intensity. Unfortunately, his search for "the soul of a chef" is laid over what are essentially three separate pieces. Less than the sum of its part, the book will eventually test anyone's patience for reading page after page of menus and description of nouvelle cuisine creations. The Right Stuff

Brought The Soul of a Chef with me on holiday travels and finished it today... gosh, I loved it. At the risk of waxing poetic... Ruhlman achieves that delicious mix of confidence and humility in his writing voice. His mix of suspense, humor, and journalism kept me buoyant. Ruhlman shows-not-tells on every page. His writing style is a bit like Lola and TFL styles combined. Love love love how he ended the CMC section. I love all the foreshadowing about Chef Brian, but how it was still a cliff-hanger until the end. I love his spiraling back and how he drops a punchline and then circles back to explain explicitly. I loved all the little touches, how he slows down to develop the characters... the story about how Chef Michael was giving directions to two diners and the guy was on the phone, with the U-turn... follow that guy!! Classic.
Ruhlman writes a damn good story! Happy to finally get on board with this author.

Bought it once, followed by three more copies

An old favorite with three sections. The first covers a culinary exam virtually nobody takes (and certainly no Michelin-quality chefs) because it's so hard and it would be a disgrace to fail.

The next two chapters cover struggling young Cleveland chef Michael Simon (now ubiquitous on television with his bald pate and contagious smile and energy), and established chef Thomas Keller (The French Laundry and Per Se).

The book introduced me to this pair years ago - but somebody borrowed my copy and never returned it.

I purchased three copies, for myself, a son-in-law who loves to cook, and a son who loves to cook (and read the book fifteen+ years ago).

Recommended highly, both for the story of a dream to show your stye and food (Simon) and devotion to perfection (Keller) with whimsey, local product, devotion to using all of the animal, and the cleanest kitchen you can imagine.

5 stars for the first two parts, 1 star for the third

If I was writing the review just based on the first two parts of the book, I would have given it 5 stars. The first part about the Certified Master Chef competition really did read like a suspense novel. It took a lot of self control not to jump to the end to see who won! Part II about Michael Symon's Lola restaurant in Cleveland gave a real feel for the restaurant, the chef and even the city. But Part III about Thomas Keller's French Laundry read more like a hagiography written by a blushing school boy. I admit I have never eaten at the French Laundry, and unless I win the lottery I am very unlikely to do so. But his gushing praise of everything about the chef and his restaurant came across like a desert that his two or three shades too sweet.

It proposes a method by which it becomes possible to investigate how the point of view of a work of fiction is created in an original and adapted in translation. It shows that there are potential problems involved in the translation of linguistic features that constitute point of view (deixis, modality, transitivity and free indirect discourse) and that this has an impact on the way works are translated. Traditionally, comparative analysis of originals and their translations have relied on manual examinations; this book demonstrates that corpus-based tools can greatly facilitate and sharpen the process of comparison. Excellent!

Projects, insights and operation of AE 7.0 in ABUNDANCE! I would swear by any Adobe publication if you want to go deeper into the program, save time and establish an intelligence about work flow. I just wish that Adobe would provide a FLASH PLUG-IN that is universal and doesn't require updating. Aside from that on my wish list, Adobe is tops and has provided me with a knowledgeable source for my professional work. All the Classroom publications are great as well.

Excellent reading for more advanced users

Finally, a book for those of us who are already familiar or even very capable with After Effects but still want to push our knowledge even further. If you fall into this category, at the very least you will learn many new highly valuable tips and tricks and will gain a better understanding of After Effects' inner workings. For those of you who are less familiar with After Effects, fret not. The writing style in this book assumes some prior knowledge but even neophytes will find it entertaining, easy to understand and not so brisk as to leave you hanging. You will be able to follow along with even a cursory understanding of After Effects, and little to no prior experience in compositing or visual effects. It's really that good. And in case you're wondering, Mark, Stu and the whole Orphanage crew are the nicest bunch of artists in the industry, and are some of the brightest stars out there. If you're like me and are sick of buying $50 books written by people who don't even seem to understand the subject matter they are "teaching," this book will be a breath of fresh air. From page one you know you are learning from some of the best.

Studio Techniques primarily focuses on using After Effects for the creation of feature film/television special effects such as compositing of green screen footage, integrating 3D elements with live action etc. While similar material might be out there, make no mistake - none of it addresses it from the standpoint of the industry professional quite like this book does. The techniques and requirements of feature film & television projects are a completely different beast, and this book will prepare you for dealing with those real world challenges like no material I have found to date. Every pixel of your work will be examined and scrutinized in dailies, and this book goes deep into the techniques necessary to produce polished, amazing results.

Unlike many books out there, it doesn't just give you a taste of one subject and then move on before you understand the topic at hand. The authors really made sure that this book was comprehensive and effective, sometimes reiterating points too many times just to ensure that you are establishing good workflow practices and that you understand the key points. This aspect of production work can't be emphasized enough, and oddly most material out there glosses over this most important part of VFX work. I have seen many good artists passed over because their organizational and workflow skills were so chaotic that they were more trouble than their artistic abilities could compensate for.

If you are even remotely interested in using After Effects for SpecialFX and compositing work, this is without a doubt the first book to buy. I highly recommend it.

Adobe has released CS5 by now".In my opinion (being a self taught technical guru all my life),its important to learn the basics Mechanisim of any software.If you learn and Dominate the earlier version of any software,chances are you will be a total expert when it comes to dealing with all its future upgrades.
Put it this way.Software is a language.If you truly master one language,you can master them all.

In this remarkable contribution to photographic criticism and psychoanalytic literature, Ulrich Baer traces the hitherto overlooked connection between the experience of trauma and the photographic image. Instead of treating trauma as a photographic "theme," Baer examines the striking parallel between those moments arrested mechanically by photography and those arrested experientially by the traumatized psyche -- moments that bypass normal cognition and memory. Taking as points of departure Charcot's images of hysteria and Freud's suggestion that the unconscious is structured like a camera, Baer shows how the invention of photography and the emergence of the modern category of "trauma" intersect. Drawing on recent work in the field of trauma studies, he shows how experiences that are inherently split between their occurrence and their remembrance might register in and as photographic images.In light of contemporary discussions of recovered memories and the limits of representing such catastrophes as the Holocaust, Baer examines photographs of artistic, medical, and historical subjects from the perspective of witnessing rather than merely viewing. He shows how historicist approaches to photography paradoxically overlook precisely those cataclysmic experiences that define our age. The photograph's apparent immunity to time is seen as a call for a future response--a response that is prompted by the ghostly afterlife of every photograph's subject. In a moving discussion of a rare collection of color slides taken by a Nazi official in the Lodz ghetto, Baer makes us aware that it is the viewer's responsibility to account for the spectral evidence embedded in every image.

Applying psychoanalytical theory to photo criticism, Baer (German, NYU) makes comparisons between the notion of the photograph's "arrested moment" and how the human psyche processes trauma. He draws from Freud, Barthes, Benjamin, and Charcot, as well as recent studies in trauma, to prove that images representing a traumatic history lack the concept of "future" and forward movement that characterizes conventional documentary photographs. Traumatic memory, like the camera, freezes the moment and removes it from the forward motion of linear time. Instead of sensational images, as the title might suggest, Baer uses seemingly commonplace photographs to illustrate his ideas, thus placing the viewer in the role of witness instead of innocent onlooker. Ultimately, Baer is able to support his premise by establishing the connection between the concept of trauma and the development of the photograph, making this research original as well as timely. weak argumentation but nonetheless interesting

This book is suggestive rather than having a strong argument. The structure is a little eccentric: photographs of hysteria are analysed in one chapter, while the rest of the book considers photographs about the holocaust. There's little engagement with other books on the topic of holocaust imagery such as the work of Didi-Huberman, Lisa Saltzman and Barbie Zelizer. On the other hand, the book does raises some interesting issues about hysteria and the camera and examines some interesting photographic projects about the Holocaust. On the whole, the writer does not handle images well, although the discussion of landscape is quite nuanced. My feeling is the book needed another draft and deeper thinking, nonetheless it is provocative and well worth reading.

Ronald C. Rosenberg is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University. The authors have extensive experience in teaching system dynamics at the graduate and undergraduate levels and have published numerous papers on the industrial applications of the subject.

Book Was in very good shape, as promised

Book Was in very good shape, as promised. Very little notes and comments made by the previous user, as promised.
Book materiel is very well written but the subject matter is still hard. I am using it for a PhD. level class so I did expect the subject to be somehow harder than my previous classes.

Good book

For learning bond graphs this book is perfect especially for the very low price. This is the cheapest book I have purchased in school and I will be keeping it. The bond graph sections of this book are perfect but the equation derivation sections are lacking in terms of clarity and content. I would recommend this book for learning bond graphs and getting a brief understanding of deriving the equations and transfer functions.

Great book to begin to understand the concepts of bond graphs. Also has chapters on deriving state equations. This book is definitely a "readers book". Its more of a book you sit down, read, and think about the material. Not so much a book filled with example problems.
