Shanes, a British painter and art historian, here reconciles the "formal simplicity" of Brancusi's (1876-1957) sculpture with its "richness of meaning." He treats the works thematically, dividing them into categories, following their chronological development and illustrating his analysis with his own photographs of the sculptures. A chapter about "The Natural World," for example, deals with the celebrated Bird in Space and Fish series. Although Brancusi's oeuvre lends itself well to this compartmentalized approach, the result is slightly fragmented. The last chapter fails to synthesize previous discussions, instead proffering generalities ("Brancusi elevated the idealism of Renaissance art to a new plane, creating a modern sculptural language in the process"). Some of the more challenging modernist issues operating in Brancusi's art--the polarities of real and ideal and abstraction vs. representation--are raised but not resolved. A chapter consisting of the artist's statements on art and a section about his techniques, however, round out the book nicely.

Brancusi

I found this book a useful source of information about Brancusi. It captures the essence of Brancusi himself and what made his scultpures so good. I liked the fact that Brancusi's comments about his sculptures and how he made them were included in it, it somehow, made you feel more about the sculptures themselves. His life story is interwoven with his sculptures in this book, just as his life and art are interwoven. What I don't like about the book is the way it is set out. It is confusing and does not give you a clear picture, altogether. Although, the author said that he hoped the reader could get more out of it that way, it somehow does not work. It was set out, not in a chronological order but with specific titles like 'The Human World'. Overall, though I liked this book as it analyzed the sculptures very well however, it raises the issues of abstract scupture versus represational in Brancusi's art without actually stating anything about it??? I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Brancusi or would like to find out mroe information on him.

Good for Reference

A good text for reference purposes.
pros:
-thick pages make it durable, a plus for a textbook that is likely to become a reference book
-lots of info on common minerals for reference
-essential mineralogy knowledge is in there...
-...the info in the book is on the internet but tends to be very scattered, not much mineralogy on wikipedia unlike biology, chemistry, common core classes, etc. search a few topics in this book and all you get is scholarly research pdf papers.. and you probably won't understand those or find them very useful.
-it makes you feel smart to read it and actually understand it... although that can be time-consuming

cons:
-no color photos, although not really necessary, but the nice cover photo is misleading
-NOT an easy reading textbook-
-info is DENSE and requires multiple readings and supplemental sources to really understand it...not many good supplemental sources out there
-there are some essential and difficult concepts that the book just glances over in a paragraph or two, there should be a student guide to flesh out the info, although it would probably need to be many times thicker than the textbook itself...
-mineralogy is probably the hardest class on the path to a BS in geology or related majors once you get through chem, calc, and physics.

I am currently in a Mineralogy class and this is the required textbook. So far, it has been a fantastic resource. At first I was very disappointed at its scarcity of pictures (I'm a visual learner) and entirely black and white pages, but I am grateful that the book didn't cost $250, as it most likely would have if the book had been illustrated and printed in color.

I am a third of the way through the class and we have basically read most of the book already. It is easy to read, conversational at times. The parts explaining chemistry are easy to understand, especially if you have already taken Gen Chem, which was a pre-req for my class. The mineral indices in the back are really helpful for looking up identification methods (hand sample, properties, optics) and quick references to the cleavage, crystal classifications, etc for common minerals.

Honestly, I don't have any complaints about this book. Considering there is a wealth of mineral information available on websites such as [...] or [...], this book has just the right amount of information to learn your stuff without being overwhelmed by the endless amount of learning available in the field of mineralogy.

Also, things people don't usually talk about in reviews: this book is about an inch thick, sturdily bound and printed on high stock paper. It will hold up to several semesters in the geology department and it's not so big that you dread taking it to class with you. It's worth buying to keep, new or used, if you're a geology major or a mineralogy enthusiast.

Waste of money

I studied this book before the ASCP exam for lab management diplomat. The book says it is a "study guide" for the exam. The exam and the book are compleat different, nothing in the book was on the exam. Do not waste your money.

About the Author
Susanna S. Epp received her Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Chicago, taught briefly at Boston University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently Vincent DePaul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She has also spoken widely on discrete mathematics and has organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Epp co-organized an international symposium on teaching logical reasoning, sponsored by the Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), and she was an associate editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1991 to 2001. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), she is a co-author of the curricular guidelines for undergraduate mathematics programs: CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004.

Very well done

To start, I'm a sophmore engineering student who is in the middle of a discrete mathematics class using this book. To me, a textbook must be readable but at the same time be written on a level that ensures that the content is communicated effectively. For me, this book has accomplished that.

Susan Epp's Discrete Mathematics is very readable and straightforward with its presentation of the material, giving the reader a good view into the topics being presented. There are also a decent number of fully worked through and relevant examples along with a plethora of exercises in each section. Selected exercises do have answers in the back of the book, so you can check your work and ensure that you are doing things correctly. There are even fully written out answers for a good number of the many exercises involving proofs.

That is another thing, discrete mathematics involves less computations and more logical, written proofs, something that I had no prior experience with before taking this class. Since starting though, I have been able to pick things up without any undue difficulty (not saying its easy!), but this book has really helped me take the concepts being taught in lecture and simultaneously expand on and cement them outside the classroom. This is a textbook that you can actually read and really gain some value from, so I would highly recommend it (or if your professor is using it for your class, know that you are using a superb book).

Exact book I needed. Even though it says brief edition it was still the correct book. My professor said that there are no difference between the brief and normal edition.

Brief and to the point

This is indeed a brief edition compared to the 4th edition. Some things are cut out from the 4th edition to quickly get the main point across to the reader. This book was very useful in getting ideas past to the reader. As a person with no real interest or experience with proofs before using this book, this book has taught me much about proof writing. The example proofs in the book are written in a way so that every step is clearly written out so that the reader should not have any room to insert doubts. An excellent version for students trying to quickly understand number theory, sets, and logic as well as proof writing.
