A helpful & interesting guide to some of my favorite places!

This book inspired me to plan a series of long weekend trips to the lower NC coast, and revisit some of the places I vacationed at as a child/teenager. There are many historic and curious areas and sites pointed out in every chapter, places that we drove by years ago, but never really took notice of. For instance, a civil war ship wrecked close to the beach and now located under a fishing pier is only one of the many curousities Barefoot discusses. I was also inspired to visit places I had never been, such as the town of Southport, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and Bald Head Island, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. The descriptions of even the smallest details given by Barefoot lured me to find these wonderful places.I can now appreciate the lower NC coast both from the historical perspective, and from the aspect of its unspoiled, natural beauty.

Shallow, obvious suggestions, misleading description

I thought from the description it would be a guide to better shooting with pro tips. Well, the photos are pro but the commentary is super general for complete beginners. "Some shots are better if the subject doesn't know they are being photographed." Is one example. This is useless for someone who shoots a bit and wants to take it to the next level.

HMM It' just OK.

I got this for ideas. Helpful tips? not so much. Nat. Geo. has very good Photographers. Help tips a vague at best. If your looking for the mechanical settings (F-stops, shutter speeds, ISO, and so on). this isn't for you. What I got out of the book was ideas I'd like to try. One could look at it like a mystery, such as how did they set this image up? What would I use? There are lots of books out there with great images. This book let me down.

If you're looking for a book on the technical aspects of a shot, you may want to look elsewhere. If you're looking for some creative inspiration and motivation, I recommend that you flip through this book! Although there are "recipes" or "formulations" for each and every photograph on the back of the book, Getting Your Shot wants to motivate all those that are interested in photography to capture special moments... moments that you may have patiently wait for and carefully look for. This book is one of the best photography books I've read. It is beautifully put together. I was astounded at the level of care and attention that was placed to weaving every single photograph, story, quote, and photography tip inside this masterpiece. It contains great stories and narratives. I enjoyed reading the stories and photographs so much so that I jotted a few quotes down. It portrays the viewpoints of what many of the photographers were thinking and how they captured the photograph. It is so interesting to see how the photographers went about taking the shot, how patient they were, and how creative they were in catching the light. You can feel each photograph. You can taste the moments. You are transported to so many places within a short amount of time while learning a bit of photography tips on the side. I'm so glad to see National Geographic publish such good works of photography! Sit down, grab your favorite drinks, dive right in, and indulge your senses. You will definitely emerge a different person.

About the Author
Micol Negrin is the owner of Rustico Cooking, an Italian cooking school in Manhattan. She is the author of the James Beard–nominated Rustico: Regional Italian Country Cooking and The Italian Grill. For six years, she was the editor of The Magazine of La Cucina Italiana. She has written for major publications, including Cooking Light, Fine Cooking, and Bon Appétit. Micol Negrin lives on a small lake in New Jersey with her husband, Dino De Angelis.

Today, if you travel across Italy, you can still find echoes of the medieval and Renaissance sweet sauces, especially at Christmas, when nuts, sugar, and cinnamon frequently lend festive flavor to pastas. You’ll also find echoes of the spice trade that fueled much of the Italian economy in centuries past in pasta sauces that call for nutmeg, cinnamon, poppy seeds, caraway seeds, and other spices. But what you’ll find most of all is a tremendous variety of sauces that draw on the bounty of land and sea, on the ingenuity of the home cook, and on the imperative of letting the pasta itself be the star of the plate. No sauce is so intense as to mask the pasta it is served with. No sauce is so plentiful as to drown the pasta it is tossed with. The sauce is merely a vehicle for enjoying the pasta, and it is a vehicle that changes marvelously from region to region, depending on what local cooks can find in their gardens and on what has informed their cooking over the centuries.

My Italian husband was impressed!

This is the first time I shared a cookbook with my husband. We enjoyed going through the book together as if we were actually traveling from northern to southern Italy while being introduced to the foods native to that particular region.
The recipes were appealing and mostly used few and basic ingredients. Each region had a brief introduction with tidbits of information. Sometimes the author described a region's basic staple or gave a brief economic history.
My Sicilian husband chuckled when he read that bread crumbs were a 'poor man's cheese' as he recalled how delicious they tasted over 70 years ago in his grandmother's kitchen.
I made one of the mushroom recipes last night and plan to try another this coming week.
Finally, I'd say I just discovered that fewer ingredients and less time can result in a very satisfying meal.

Excellent Textbook

I am blown away by the material in this book. So far, I have gained extensive knowledge on how a patient sees the medical staff and how important it is to know your skill set and be great at what you do. Customer service skills are essential and this book gives detailed and informative information from when you first turn the page in the beginning. It has great online features that help you study and even for future use to help you stay on top of your skills. I had the earlier version and this one out does it. I am very glad I purchased this book and am using it for class. It is the best!

This book really goes into the nuts and bolts of the Medical Administrative Assistant. Actually it is the only book I found that was reasonably priced, and it is good-really good. It is an easy read like someone is talking to you within a lecture setting, but it is in written form. I am glad I purchased this book for study and to follow me in my new career.

Brilliant Balletic Comedy & Translation

In both these plays, Wilbur brings Moliere's true genius to real life. Previous translations of Moliere's work pale by comparison to Wilbur's brilliant translations. It was my feeling, that would Moliere by alive today, and writing in American English, he would write the way Wilbur translated it.
In comparison to prose translations in the past, Wilbur, past US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner, truly gives the reader the real feeling of Moliere's "Balletic Comedy" style, as Moliere used his poetry and comedy to make complex and serious points about life of "regular" people, as opposed to royalty such as Shakespeare concentrated on, and so many other playwrites of the past.
In reading Wilbur's translations, one can virtually imagine the cast prancing and mincing across the stage as they humorously render these rhyming couplets at each other, and the audience. The true genius of both Moliere and Wilbur is illustrated most profoundly and strikingly in these translations. Any true lover of Moliere, and even those who have never read him before, should treat themselves to Wilbur's translations for a Moliere experience, that is unparalleled in any other versions previously published.

The misanthrope and the religious hypocrite

Moliere's leading characters often have one major negative trait which dictates their behavior throughout the play. In this they often seem to be mechanical stock characters and not flesh- and - blood living human beings. In 'The Misanthrope' Alceste believes he must tell the truth to everyone he sees. This is despite the advice of his best friend Philinte. Alceste alienates everyone. At the same time he is madly in love with with Celimene. He wants her to go away with him to retreat from hypocritical society. She however flirtatious and light - minded prefers society to him. The play closes with Philinte trying to persuade Alceste not to leave society completely.

In the second play in this volume the leading character is a religious hypocrite. He finds his way into the heart and mind of a wealthy gentleman Orgon and dominates his family life. Tartuffe steals his money , leads Orgon to disinherit his son and offer his daughter to Tartuffe in marriage. Tartuffe attempts to seduce Orgon's wife. Orgon is convinced to hide under a table where he overhears Tartuffe's entreaties. Orgon then decides to eject him from the family but cannot. It is only with the intercession of the king that the religious hypocrite is stopped. This play raised a furor in its day and the Church opposed its production. Moliere's patron Louis XIV allowed its production in private but only after five years allowed its public staging.

In both these plays Moliere viciously satires the human propensity to remain fixed and static in one's own character, and reaction to reality. He derides human folly but always with the redeeming grace of laughter.

For the contemporary reader of the work who does not feel the special force of the work in its original language there often may seem something forced and artificial in the work. Moliere's work it seems to me gain much from being staged and to know them truly reading alone is not enough.
