Can I Keep My Winnings?

Diane is a lawyer who has opened her own business and she isn't doing so well. She's lost her car, her apartment, and is living in her office. When Emma rings her doorbell on a Sunday, she's convinced it's probably a bill collector, yet she answers the door to find Emma asking for help. She is the winner of a $73
million dollar lotto ticket and her time is running out. She has 24 hours to claim it or it's gone. She hasn't turned it in because of some issues and secrets that she doesn't want aired again in the newspaper. What Emma wants is for Diane to keep the judge from letting her name be attached to the winnings. Since California and most states use the money to supplement their schools, it's going to be a hard job. Diane has to find a good reason for keeping her name from the media. She immediately begins searching for ways to keep it quiet.

24 HOUR LOTTERY an interesting story and brought up a lot of information that most citizens don't have when it comes to winning the lottery. It was informative and slightly mysterious as the reader waits for the final outcome. Emma, Diane, and the judge's characteristics were well developed. The book kept you on the edge of your chair while you waited for the outcome. It was definitely worth reading.

Would make a good movie

You might initially think that 24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a bit of a paradox. Afterall, who in their right mind would hesitate to turn in a $73 million lottery ticket? As it turns out, Emma Watkins seems to have a valid reason. She just needs Dianne Canton's help to persuade an unsympathetic judge that her fear is bona fide. Dianne is skeptical, but is so down on her luck that she is willing to make the effort.

With economic times being what they are, the dire circumstances that Dianne finds herself in is very believable. The other characters in this book are also convincing and well fleshed out. I could especially envision Emma, with her critical attitude and unedited emissions.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a fast paced novel that you won't want to put down. The ending has a good twist, but also left me wanting more answers. Perhaps there will be a follow up novel? In the meantime, I wouldn't mind seeing this on the big screen.

Great New Addition to The 'Law and Order' Genre

Who could refuse $73 million dollars?

Emma Watkins, a sixty-something disbarred judge with a heart of flint won't cash in her winning lottery ticket unless she can have the prize and remain anonymous. Emma needs a lawyer.

Dianne Canton, who skidded by to pass the California bar exam on the fifth try, is Emma's choice for her champion.

Readers will be intrigued to learn that even a well-funded effort to recall a judge can give some bad guys a chance to coverup their crimes, launder batches of money, kill a few people, and destroy anyone who gets in the way of their greed.

Gayle Tiller's courtroom ace, Dianne, juggles her personal, financial and romantic problems with the support of too much rocky road ice cream and Emma's hilarious and frequent swift verbal kicks to the backside of Dianne's legal briefs.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket entertains, puzzles and surprises every step of the way, down to the final minutes when the prize money hangs in the balance. Emma has secrets, as does the star witness for Dianne's case, the cranky judge hearing the arguments, and a succession of infuriating bureaucrats who stand in the way of justice. And, yes, Dianne has her own trunk full of relevant secrets as well.

I was intrigued and happily annoyed by the gruff Emma and mystified as to her motives. Dianne's rundown office, expanding waist line, and disarrayed life amuses because they promise to be fixable issues, once the poor lawyer catches a break. Tiller makes both lawyer and client come alive through their human failings, all-too-human hopes, and funny, witty jibes.

The plot line is wonderfully convoluted, just enough to keep us asking "what happens next?" without crossing the line into "that doesn't seem realistic."

Readers who like John Grisham's and Lisa Scottolini's fictional lawyers and their plights will be glad to offer partnerships in the legal genre firm to Dianne Canton and Gayle Tiller. Here's hoping both return again and again.

Terrific Help To Understand Emily Dickinson

Cristanne Miller, who is now English department head at State University of New York in Buffalo, authored this book before she was such a giant among Emily Dickinson scholars and professors. It's easy to see in this fairly early work why Miller has found such high regard in literary circles. Aspects of Dickinson's strategies are organized and approached very systematically. Without assuming that she can divine the mind of Dickinson, Miller takes her readers as nearly inside the tactical thoughts of the poet as I think is possible. Those who enjoy Emily Dickinson poetry will thank their lucky stars for the "leg up" on understanding the poems after reading "A Poet's Grammar."

About the Author

Ronald J. Tallarida holds a BS and MS in physics/mathematics and a Ph.D in pharmacology. His primary appointment is professor of pharmacology at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. For more than 30 years, he also served as adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where he received the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching of mathematics. He has published more than 290 works, been the recipient of NIH research grants, and served as consultant to industry and government agencies. His research interests include the mathematical modeling of biological systems, feedback control, and the action of drugs and drug combinations.

Simple intro to a complex subject

This book is a valuable reference to those trying to understand the subject of six sigma. It is definitely not meant to be an all-encompassing reference on the subject, yet it is an important primer (yes, PRIMER) for those who wanto to understand six sigma. Many people immediately skip to the intricate details of six sigma without understanding what is ultimately the PURPOSE of six sigma, and hence fail to fully understand the subject.
The book is written in the first person story form about a man trying to understand from his colleague what six sigma is, how it is implemented, and who are the major players. At the beginning the terminology might be slightly confusing, but it becomes clearer towards the end as the author provides some helpful examples. As I said, will not make you an expert on the complexities of six sigma, but it will provide a useful introduction and will clear many misconceptions that you might have about the subject. The book is brief (shouldnt take anyone more than 3 days to read), well written in simple and logical order.

About the Author
Jeff Jay is a professional interventionist and author. His work has appeared on CNN, the Jane Pauley Show, PBS, Forbes Online and professional journals. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and a certified addictions professional. He has served as president of the Terry McGovern Foundation in Washington, DC, and on the boards of directors for several professional organizations.

Jeff is the coauthor of the best-selling book "Love First: A Family's Guide to Intervention," (2nd ed., Hazelden, 2008) and "At Wit's End: What You Need to Know When a Loved One Is Diagnosed with Addiction and Mental Illness," (Hazelden, 2007). He heads a national private practice that provides intervention and recovery services. He is is a former staff member of the Hazelden Foundation, Brighton Hospital and Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center. His personal recovery from addiction dates from October 4, 1981.

Must Read for the loving family with an addict

Outstanding book for a family struggling to know how to respond to a loved one with an addiction problem. It provides detailed step by step guidance on how to perform an intervention to get the addict the help that he or she needs. We followed the instructions carefully, bought books for everyone on our intervention team, and watched the videos on their website. We bathed the effort in prayer and God answered those prayers in a mighty way. Everything fell into place, a wonderful testimony to the power of pray and love in action. When the last intervention letter was read and we asked our loved one if she would go to the treatment that we had arranged, she said YES! Hugs and tears all around and the whole team accompanied her to the treatment center.

Required reading for Families

I didn't know how to "Love First" because I was so resentful and angry at my brother for his horrible choices. My family is a well educated, upper-middle class family and I had no previous exposure to drug addiction. I was helpless to know how to help. Love First has taught me how to detach, love my brother-hate his DISEASE and move in a positive direction. If you have a family member or friend caught in addiction........I urge you to read this. You will swear it was written about your loved one, for they ALL say the same things, do the same things and live for their addiction and you won't see that until you read. My heart goes out to anyone reading this review.......it's the hardest thing I've ever done.

Covers All The Bases

Love First emphasizes using love as your bases for intervening in another's life. It gives very specific way to do an intervention, the before, during and after. It covers it all, even age wise and different addictions. I'm reading it for information on how to do an intervention with a loved one and his wife. It gives examples of sample letters and preparing for all aspects of the intervention, including the possible objections. I think it would be helpful to anyone who is worried about someone you care about.

#1 discrete math book

The book is very well-written, clear and precise. I have read a couple of other books for discrete math courses, but found nothing exciting there; mostly frustrating errors, bad examples and confusion. Grimaldi's book covers pretty much everything you need to understand and apply in Discrete Mathematics. The exercises are well designed, in increasing difficulty. For most of the exercises, one can find similar examples in the text. Parts 1 and 2 of the book are by far the best read in Fundamentals and Enumeration I have ever encountered. Section 11 of Part 3 is a very nice introduction to Graph Theory. My only suggestion for improvement is some revision of sections 12 and 13 on graph algorithms - these can be simplified in terms of notation and description. Part 4 is for more advanced readers; it is usually used in a second course in Discrete mathematics. However, without being as exhaustive as the first three parts, the fourth part is presented with the same clarity and detail as the other three. I would strongly recommend this book not only to anyone who teaches Discrete mathematics, but also to any student who studies Discrete mathematics from a different book. If you are frustrated about the material; Grimaldi's book would give you the understanding and clarity you need. Definitely a five star product!

Excellent overview of Discrete Mathematics for CS people

This book is perhaps the best reference for Discrete Math I have seen. The book is comprehensive. It gives an introduction to many topics every CS coding theory, number theory, partial orders, even automata. There are many examples and illustrations to understand the material. There are plenty of excercises. The text is well written; no errors or typos. It would be nice if the book had more proofs.

A math book that's actually understandable

Finally! A math book which is acutally well written, has enough examples to illustrate key concepts, and has enough problems to keep the math student busy. Discrete mathematics is a fairly involved subject and books on the topic range from relatively basic to extremely difficult treatises which only a PhD or a math professor could understand. Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics : An Applied Introduction by Ralph Grimaldi is a book which will appeal to both sides of the spectrum. The book is written so that most undergraduate students will have little difficulty understanding, but graduate students will also find it indispensable as a reference. The illustrated examples are actually relevant to the homework problems, which is often missing in mathematical texts. Finally, the book does not try to overwhelm the reader with lofty proofs or stilted language. Each chapter builds on the previous subjects learned. That's all I can ask for in a math text. I like the coverage of combinatorics in the first chapter, which does a better job than many probability textbooks. And be sure to understand Euclid's theroem and the examples given in the book. Quite a few high-tech companies will ask you about the problem Grimaldi gives as an example of Euclid's theorem in their job interviews.
