The best introduction on falconry in America today

First of all, I must disagree slightly with the other reviewer. The author's writing style is a bit informal, but I don't think most readers will have a problem with that. It is grammatically correct with no spelling errors, which is much more than can be said about the previous review!
As for the author's trustworthiness, this is apparent early on. Rather than get bogged down in flowery prose or dense scientific terminology, he uses his experience of trapping, manning, and flying red tailed hawks year after year to give the best advice a book can give. Of course, there is no substitute for personal guidance and hands on experience, but the first is required by law under the sponsership program, and the other can only come from doing.
I would definatly encourage the American shopper who's interested in falconry to pick THIS BOOK and no other, save maybe the Apprentice Guides published by California's falconry association (I haven't read them, so can't say for sure). The reason is that many other excellent books on falconry, such as Jemima Parry-Jone's, are written in Britain by British falconers. The rules are ENTIRELY different there. In Britain, falconers cannot trap wild birds. They must buy captive bred birds, and there are no regulations, or very little. Its a lot like buying a Cockatoo in the US. In America, however, falconry is highly regulated, and your first bird MUST be a wild caught Red Tailed Hawk in the vast majority of states. Thus a book that urges you to begin with a captive bred Harris Hawk is going to be of limited value to you. Even manning (the basic 'training') of a captive bred bird is different from a wild caught one.
So, if you want to be a falconer, GET THIS BOOK! Then, find a sponser (there are several web sites to help you find willing people in your area, a quick google search will show you), and study this book-most of what you need to know to pass the falconry exam is inside. If you are just interested in falconry, this is still a great place to start if you want an American perspective.

Excellent book

Having just made it to general falconer, I must say this book was very helpful.
It is simple and to the point, and contains very helpful ideas.
one such idea is the use of a guide line and then a short lead as a creance. This sounds so basic, but this prevents the hawk from gaining 50' of momentum and then getting yanked back to earth.
As has been mentioned, nothing can replace hands on experience and the help of those who have practiced the sport for much of their lives.
Also-make sure you get the new edition. Amazon seems confused on this listing, but the new one is hardbound and has great color photos...

"The Red-tailed Hawk"

"The Red-tailed Hawk" is a knowledgable and well written book that keeps your interest through out it. It would get a rating of an eight on a scale of one through ten (ten being the highest). The way that this book is written, it does not have a real professional prose, but rather like that of a conversation. The wrighter is talking directly towards the reader, and while many guides may be written this way, this particular one does not give the book a qualafied sence to it. This book gives the felling of a conversation, and though this gives a nice on-on-one feeling, it does not give the feeling to the certfiability of the information. "Now that your hawk has ben weighed, checked over, fitted with her equipment, and sprayed for lice, she can be put into a completely dark mews for some needed rest." (23) The way this is written it is personalized to the reader, and while you feel like the wrighter is giving you the information directly, you still do not know if you can trust that information. The writing had a nice use of diction because it uses falconry vocabulary. This is good for ther primary reason that anyone reading this book should be learning these words and their meanings. Reading this book, you would want to be interestied in falconry. Some other books that might interest a person about falconry would be; "California Hawking Guide", and "A Treatise on Hawks and Hawking".
