About the Author

Steven Seidman is a Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany. His books include Romantic Longings: Love in America, 1830-1980 (Routledge, 1991), Embattled Eros: Sexual Politics and Ethics in America (Routledge, 1992), Beyond the Closet (Routledge, 2002), and The Social Construction of Sexuality (W. W. Norton & Co, 2003).

Nancy Fischer is an Associate Professor of Sociology, and the Director of Metro-Urban Studies at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a former chair of the American Sociological Association’s Section on Sexualities. She has written about incest, urban sustainability, and is currently working on a project on the social meaning of second hand and vintage clothing.

Chet Meeks was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a queer theorist and taught courses in Sociology of Sexuality and Social Theory at Georgia State (and previously at Northern Illinois University). His published works include ‘Civil Society and the Sexual Politics of Difference’ published in Sociological Theory, as well as the co-edited Handbook of New Sexuality Studies (Routledge, 2006). He passed away in 2008.

In the late 1980s, President Yoweri Museveni announced his belief that Uganda’s successful development depended on increased gender equity and backed his opinions by setting several women-centered policies in motion, including a 1989 rule that at least 39 seats in the Ugandan parliament be reserved for women.In this fascinating study, based on in-depth interviews with both male and female parliamentarians, women in nongovernmental organizations, and rural residents of Uganda, Sylvia Tamale explores how women’s participation in Ugandan politics has unfolded and what the impact has been for gender equity. The book examines how women have adapted their legislative strategies for empowerment in light of Uganda’s patriarchal history and social structure. The author also looks at the consequences and implications of women’s parliamentary participation as a result of affirmative action handed down by the president, rather than pushed up from a grassroots movement.Although focusing on Uganda, Tamale’s study is relevant to other African and non-African countries grappling with the twin challenges of democracy and development.

Bible verses applied to real life situations

Michael does a great job of choosing bible verses that can be applied to real life situations. He also shares stories from his tender heart. His love for his family and friends are very obvious in this book. This is a great book to read if you need some encoragement from the greatest book ever written,the bible and also michael is a great encourager. I would recommend this book to anyone who feela like they need a friend

This book was the next to best book I have ever read. (The best being the Bible) I recomend that everyone read this book. It tells about real stories that for me hit close to home. If you know of a teen that is in trouble be a friend and give them this book.

Back to Basics!

This book is very easy to read and it's contents are excellent food for thought. The ideal gift for a young person or someone graduating high school or college. The main part of the book is a section of Biblical promises for every situation imaginable and it is punctuated with notes by Michael W Smith, who is gifted when it comes to writing for young people. His advice and recounting of experiences he's faced are simple but profound, and very down to earth.
I was also very impressed with the presentation page at the front and autographs section at the back of the book. Definitely one to put on the shopping list!

I expected to know how to carry out basic plumbing repairs after reading this book but bad illustrations, confused text and design didn't enable me to accomplish this task, this book can be used as general reference only, not to be used as a practical know how guide!!

About the Author

Michael Friendly is a professor of psychology, founding chair of the Graduate Program in Quantitative Methods, and an associate coordinator with the Statistical Consulting Service at York University. In addition to his research interests in psychology, Professor Friendly has broad experience in data analysis, statistics, and computer applications. His main research areas are the development of graphical methods for categorical and multivariate data and the history of data visualization. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics and Statistical Science.

David Meyer is a professor of business informatics at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. He earned a PhD in business administration from the Vienna University of Economics and Business, with an emphasis on computational economics. Dr. Meyer has published numerous papers in various computer science and statistical journals. His research interests include R, business intelligence, data mining, and operations research.

Outstanding Book on Data Analysis

After reading this the first time, I realized that my toolbox was seriously compromised in dealing with discrete data analysis. It took me the second time to truly appreciate this work.

Those who are true mathematicians will probably scoff at this text. While there is some proofs and detailed mathematical principles, the book is much more focused on applications using R. For someone like me who is more interested in *using* the techniques rather than studying them academically, then, for me, this is a good book.

Pros:
1. A amazing array of examples using a vast number of R packages that, prior to reading the book, I was totally unfamiliar with.
2. Just enough theory, but not too much. Quite a good book to use for self study.

Cons:
1. I thought some of the post analysis explanations were weak in spots. I wish the explanations of results were better detailed.
2. The dizzying number of examples. Recommendation: if you read this book, pick 1-dataset (for example, UCBAdmissions) and just work with that for the remainder of the book. You will find it less confusing than trying to understand a particular topic jumping from one dataset to another.

In all, just the learning experience made the book worth the money spent. If a better book exists on the topic, then let me know. I think it will be difficult to find one though.

Needs an update

I'm mid-career in architecture. I bought this book to get better acquainted with MEP systems and sustainability. This book admits that it is designed to help with schematic design-level decisions, and the basic information it gives is generally solid. My biggest concern is that the book is in need of an update. Over and over again the author says the best way to analyze passive solar techniques is by making physical models. Physical models are great, but software can accomplish solar analysis faster, for less money, and more accurately. Many of the book's pages are given over to explanations of heliodynes. This technology is ancient history. The case studies are all at least ten years old. Many of the diagrams and illustrations are from the 70s and 80s. There was a lot of good thinking done 20, 30 or 40 years ago, but certainly a book on sustainability can do better than that. The book passingly mentions LED lighting as a potential technology in the future; that statement is typical in being out of date. The publication date is 2009, but the book reads like a much older text. One last thing: it has a residential bias. If you are primarily interested in commercial architecture, this book is a little thin.

A Great Understanding for the Future of Architectural Design

Being an architecture student, I understand the future of architecture is held in sustainable design. I found this textbook to be an extremely reliable source for my Environmental Systems class. When designing, we now put a greater emphasis on sustainable techniques and how future generations are effected by how we design today. Lechner describes a wide variety of methods that can be used in modern architectural design. The textbook covers everything from basic sunlight integration to complex ventilation strategies. He develops these ideas based off precedent studies and historical influence. He goes into great detail when describing how and why past and future methods can be effective. A nice thing that Lechner does is he describes the pros and cons to many sustainable techniques. It's really nice to see what has worked, and what hasn't. He also summarizes each chapter, allowing the reader to pick up on the most essential ideas. Visual diagrams and images also assist the reader in understanding key components. All of the information presented is well thought out and executed to get the important concepts exposed. It's filled with relatively simple yet effective information anyone can understand. I would absolutely recommend this textbook to anyone, especially if they are looking to grasp a firm understanding of sustainable design strategies.
