Bike culture for an anthropologist

Bike Culture is a recent worldwide phenomenon that is rapidly developing. Over-population and recent increases in the price of oil drive up the cost of transportation. The result of an exploding population sharing increasingly limited resources; this is a recipe for social change.
This book documents a social change that is too important to ignore. It is surprising how little scholarly research has been written documenting bike culture. It seems to have developed in spite of its being ignored by social scientists. This is a book studying the dimensions of bicycle culture written in a college textbook format published by one of the leading publishers of scholarly books. It is written as a handbook to show how anthropological methods can be used to study worldwide bike culture. The reader is encouraged to study the bicycle culture using an anthropological methodology. This is a dense book not many will find easy to read. Though I have an M.A. in the social sciences I had to read many of the paragraphs over twice to understand.
Part of the reason for this is that it tries to cover a lot in 130p: the brief history of urban planning and the development of Victorian cities during the Industrial Revolution and the social consequences of people with competing groups of interests when they come together. It also has a brief history of the bicycle as well as a description of society as being produced by different culturally distinct social groups as they compete for common resources.
Still, this book leaves out a number of things. It does not discuss the population's increasing needs for transportation in the face of gas price increases. Population pressure is not mentioned in the index. The author claims the price of gas contributed to the 1973 bike boom without mentioning any role gas prices might have in producing the current bicycle culture. There is no explanation for either the cause or effect of lumping bicycle traffic in with pedestrian traffic.
But this is not a book about bike culture. Instead it uses bike culture to teach the methods of anthropological research. Readers are trained in detached observation. The reader is trained in observation in a series of exercises to look at the World around them by going "into the field". The book also trains the reader in how to ask questions; how to see the causes behind what you are observing and how to shift perspectives when you are looking for effects. The first half of this book is a handbook in how to use field methods to make an analysis. The second half of this book gives three separate case studies that are the products of such methods of three different cities-- Amsterdam; Bogota,Columbia & Burlington,VT. The case studies are direct, detailed and interesting and are all studies of cities with a vibrant & thriving bike culture. As I read them I wondered what makes some cities bike culture friendly and others not. I wondered how my own city in Columbia, Missouri would measure up, having gotten $25 million in 2003 to develop non-motorized transportation infrastructure with little apparent effect.
This is a college text book. It belongs on the bookshelf of Hermes on Two Wheels: The Sociology of Bicycle Messengers which is more of a sociological analysis.
