A Wealth Of Material For A Good Price

I have also purchased Wendell Odom's CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide) as well Diane Teare's Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE) Foundation Learning Guide: Foundation learning for the ROUTE 642-902 Exam (Foundation Learning Guides). I find the Odom book to be a good general introduction, and the Teare guide to be the most overall useful in that it is more in-depth than the Odom guide while still maintaining relative simplicity. Cisco material can be a dull and labored trudge; I find there is no real way to escape having to at some point buckle down and do a lot of ponderous reading. I find these books reinforce each other, but I do feel the official Cisco material is notorious for leaving things out that are, in fact, on the exam. I purchased the kindle version of this CCNP ROUTE Simplified not knowing what to expect, but hey, it was only 10 bucks. I am very impressed with the depth of the material. It is, in fact, more in depth than either of the official Cisco Press publications. The text has a very analytical flow and so is perhaps not the best introduction to the Route material; it's like a train plowing forward through layers of detail. But it is excellent; I particularly enjoyed the full treatment of OSPF LSA's and the link state database. The kindle format suffers as a vehicle for reading technical material; there are pictures embedded in the text and if you are using a tablet to read the book, it resolves the text strangely around the pictures, which do not have the same zooming resolution. Also, it is not as easy to read a networking scenario and have to keep flipping back through screen pages to remind myself of the architecture; with a physical book, you just insert a finger in the page, right? But these are quibbles having to do with the kindle format, which is still in relative infancy and clearly better suited to text that does not include technical diagrams. Overall, for the quality and depth of the materials in this book, the kindle price makes this a great bargain.

Exactly what I needed!

I was looking for a book that treated CCNP material the same way Todd Lammle treated it. With common sense and readability. Most of Cisco's books are incredibly dry and suicidally boring, especially Wendell Odom's books. There was very little info out there about this book in the way of reviews, so I took a risk in dropping the $60 to buy it. I figured at 1000 pages, the authors put some real effort into it.
Boy am I glad I took the risk. This book is very readable and very direct and to the point. The command outputs are explained perfectly and succinctly. There are side notes that point out when something is important to know for the test or when they aren't important for the test but good to know otherwise. There are some practice labs at the end of the book, which is nice. That being said, I can't begin to describe how happy I am that Paul and Farai went out of their way to write this great book for us. It is just as accurate and readable as Lammle's 640-802 book was. If you hate reading the Cisco Press because they put you to sleep, this is the book that worked for me.
Disclaimer-I have not yet taken the test, and I will read the Cisco books as part of my review for the test. That being said, when I do read the Cisco books, I'll at least know the majority of the info ahead of time.

thats like simply copying over the lines from manufacturer documentation

Seems rather complete book with plenty of detailed information. However, absence of index makes things difficult to find. Very inconvenient. Also, not sure whats 'simplified' here? While there is a wealth of information its not exactly 'fun' to read - too much of details written in sort of 'linear' manner, thats like simply copying over the lines from manufacturer documentation, one by one. After several pages its getting rather boring to read, getting immersed into all the miniscule details where its very easy to 'not see the forest behind the trees'. In addition, there are way too many references like 'we'll describe what it means later in the chapter' - that does not help at all. Its fine on occasion but if it becomes a norm in the textbook... Why discuss something here that is getting explained later (when you dont even remember 'here' anymore)? Good textbook would avoid providing material in such a way, its methodically wrong. Good textbook also, IMHO, would help to highlight the most important concepts and root principles that help to logically built a vision of the whole structure instead of providing just a heap of information. But that, of course, would require more efforts to produce (and as a minimum the writer himself should have that logical structure in his head, not just memorized details). So Im using it to prepare for my test, since I got it, but I would try to find something better and concise otherwise.
