About the Author
Jeff Jay is a professional interventionist and author. His work has appeared on CNN, the Jane Pauley Show, PBS, Forbes Online and professional journals. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and a certified addictions professional. He has served as president of the Terry McGovern Foundation in Washington, DC, and on the boards of directors for several professional organizations.
Jeff is the coauthor of the best-selling book "Love First: A Family's Guide to Intervention," (2nd ed., Hazelden, 2008) and "At Wit's End: What You Need to Know When a Loved One Is Diagnosed with Addiction and Mental Illness," (Hazelden, 2007). He heads a national private practice that provides intervention and recovery services. He is is a former staff member of the Hazelden Foundation, Brighton Hospital and Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center. His personal recovery from addiction dates from October 4, 1981.

Must Read for the loving family with an addict

Outstanding book for a family struggling to know how to respond to a loved one with an addiction problem. It provides detailed step by step guidance on how to perform an intervention to get the addict the help that he or she needs. We followed the instructions carefully, bought books for everyone on our intervention team, and watched the videos on their website. We bathed the effort in prayer and God answered those prayers in a mighty way. Everything fell into place, a wonderful testimony to the power of pray and love in action. When the last intervention letter was read and we asked our loved one if she would go to the treatment that we had arranged, she said YES! Hugs and tears all around and the whole team accompanied her to the treatment center.

Required reading for Families

I didn't know how to "Love First" because I was so resentful and angry at my brother for his horrible choices. My family is a well educated, upper-middle class family and I had no previous exposure to drug addiction. I was helpless to know how to help. Love First has taught me how to detach, love my brother-hate his DISEASE and move in a positive direction. If you have a family member or friend caught in addiction........I urge you to read this. You will swear it was written about your loved one, for they ALL say the same things, do the same things and live for their addiction and you won't see that until you read. My heart goes out to anyone reading this review.......it's the hardest thing I've ever done.

Covers All The Bases

Love First emphasizes using love as your bases for intervening in another's life. It gives very specific way to do an intervention, the before, during and after. It covers it all, even age wise and different addictions. I'm reading it for information on how to do an intervention with a loved one and his wife. It gives examples of sample letters and preparing for all aspects of the intervention, including the possible objections. I think it would be helpful to anyone who is worried about someone you care about.
