It has some great tips an tricks to visuals. However I cannot get the files to work. The .rdls are SQL 2014 so they do not work on 2008R2 or 2012. The appendix points to using SQL Express 2014 which is free however Express does not allow the use of Shared Data Sets which is being used in the file.

I have not been able to get any of the samples to work on any of my 3 Reporting Services Instances. 2008R2, 2012 or Express 2014

I would give 5 stars except for not being able to get the follow along code to work.

    High-quality

Let's clarify what the book isn't. It isn't an SSRS encyclopedia, akin to Stacia Misner's: the focus is on charts, really, and only a few of those. (A lot of SQL code is included, and steps of report design are laid out in detail, so the book ends up pretty thick). It isn't about the new features: if you are still on SQL Server 2008, you will have to skip just 4-5 pages. (Note that Adam Aspin wrote a book on PowerView, so it is definitely not because he does not know this stuff). It isn't terribly advanced: sometimes, as in the chapter on GIS, the material is pretty basic. Typically, it is intermediate, and - coming to the positives now - offers tips that even a reasonably experienced SSRS developer, such as myself, would find new and non-obvious. I especially liked the few recipes devoted to expanding SSRS's user-input-device repertoire, e.g. implementing a slider or a "carousel". Not a keeper, perhaps, but a very useful one-time read for an intermediate SSRS developer.
