Where the wild things are -- stunning photos from wild places around the globe ...

I've long been a fan of Lonely Planet travel guides. They're especially good at ferreting out the hidden treasures, the out-of-the-way places that are worth the effort to see. So I was curious to see what they'd do with what is essentially a picture book, something a little out of the ordinary for them.
The result is a beautiful collection of photos from every continent. You get no more than one stunning photo per page, and some are spread across two pages -- no distracting "crowding" here. The book itself is large: 10 3/4" x 14 1/4" -- a true "coffee table" book -- and includes a ribbon page marker.
I found myself wandering through the pages, "armchair traveling," as it were, to the wild places featured for each continent. What makes a place wild? It would seem that "wild" is in the eye of the beholder -- or the photographer, in this case, but every photo features a place that is "off the beaten path," even if not totally untouched by humans. It's easy to get drawn into the photos of places I probably will never see in person in my lifetime (Antarctica, for example).
The book comes with a partial dust jacket that is finished with a slightly "pearlized" effect. The hidden treasure, however, is inside the dust jacket. Remove it from the book, unfold it, and you have a large poster-size photo of a jaguar in a tree. Just like the wild places in the book, this is a hidden gem. Lovely touch, that.
This would be a delightful gift for any friend or family member who enjoys the discovery associated with travel -- even armchair travelers. It's beautifully finished, and would look great on any coffee table (or nightstand).

Piques Your Interest

Lonely Planet is a name well known to most travelers. Their travel books are used by many, and at times are the most used travel books. I particularly like their books on England and Germany. Now, Lonely Planet has put together a collection of photographs from across the world.
This is a large book, often called a coffee table book. A book that you might want to look at often. It covers all of the continents, and the book primarily shows photos of animals. However, there are beautiful photos of scenery covering most of the world. The book is 256 pages, and contains a summary of the photos and the photographers. I think that my grandchildren will really enjoy looking through this book. There are captions of the photos, but not much writing or information is imparted. I think a little more information about the scenery, sources, and the animals would have made this a more enjoyable book. The photos do pique your interest, but left me wanting more.

Stunning Photographs Fill This a Five-Star Volume ...

“Wild World” is a stunning example of what Lonely Planet does better than almost any other publishing company does – pique an individual’s curiosity through visual means rather than through the written word. Filled with exquisite photographs of animals and natural landscape scenes that will leave you amazed, this large coffee table book is as much fun for children as it is for adults.
Divided into seven sections – one for each continent – “Wild World” includes only a small, bolded annotation identifying the location of a photograph and, rather than a full discussion about any subject matter, only a few words describing. This is unobtrusive text does not detract from the photograph. A more complete, but still abbreviated, discussion of each photograph, the page reference, and a credit identifying the photographer conclude the book.
This wonderful volume deserves five-stars and more! It will make an excellent gift for those you love – or as a treat for yourself.
