A Must Read For Tweens And Teens

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD

The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady

I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

High-quality beginner-to-intermediate Tableau book

Wishing to learn Tableau, I downloaded an evaluation copy of Tableau Desktop, viewed about 20 (high-quality and very helpful) videos in the "Tableau Training & Tutorials" section of tableau.com, and finally ordered a batch of Tableau books from Amazon - Amazon.co.uk, in my case - with the intention of reviewing the alternatives and leaving one or two titles for further study.

The contenders included:
"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook" by Nandeshwar, Packt, 172 pages, �24 for a new paperback
"Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" by Ohmann and Floyd, Packt, 222 pages, �23
"Rapid Graphs with Tableau 8" by McDaniel, Apress, 252 pages, �29
"Learning Tableau" by Milligan, Packt, 340 pages, �33
"Communicating Data with Tableau" by Jones, O'Reilly, 334 pages, �18
"Tableau for Dummies" by Monsey and Sochan, Wiley, 352 pages, �22
"Tableau Dashboard Cookbook" by Stirrup, Packt, 336 pages, �29
"Tableau 9: Official Guide" by Peck, McGraw-Hill, 352 pages, �24

"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook", "Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" and "Rapid Graphs with Tableau 8" were eliminated first, each one a decent book "dominated" by a better one - then the low-quality "Tableau Dashboard Cookbook" left in disgrace.

The remaining contenders split into (a) good books for Tableau beginners - "Communicating Data with Tableau" and "Tableau For Dummies", and (b) beginner-to-intermediate Tableau books - "Learning Tableau" and "Tableau 9: Official Guide" - deeper, but, for different reasons, not as beginner-friendly.

Now, "Learning Tableau" is a decent book (a) crippled by its no-frills, black-and-white looks, and (b) spending much of its page count on beginner things, which could be picked up from the much nicer beginner-friendly titles, but (c) offering best-available coverage of table calculations and a number of tips and tricks. "Tableau 9: Official Guide" stands as the stronger choice, a polished and substantial book which may or may not be used as one's "gateway" to Tableau - I would recommend starting with "Tableau For Dummies" or "Communicating Data with Tableau" - but is a must as one's second Tableau book.

UPD. Add "Tableau for Healthcare" to the list of good beginner titles. Do not start learning Tableau with "Tableau 9: Official Guide" - you will appreciate it if/when you progress.

PS. Should you consider doing Tableau certification in the future, be warned: you have six months to take the exam. The warning is easy to miss - compared with that you get when taking a Qlik or Microsoft cert exam with Pearson VUE - and the exam's shelf life is half as long as Pearson's, as if missed deadlines (and free money for Loyalist, Tableau's no-name testing partner) were part of the business plan. I unwittingly missed the deadline - as it happens, by a single day - and was told to get lost by both Loyalist and Tableau. I have had a chance to observe Qlik's response to a similar customer request, and that was simply helpful; Tableau's, on the other hand, was North Korea meets Kafka. Don't get into this situation.

The Best Yet

So many books try and explain ecg's in language that is understandable to the practicing RN but this is the only book I've found that is useful. I'm buying a new version to replace my very worn out one.

This book is a true gem. It is a guide to any couple who wants to deepen their connection via sensual massage. It explains everything: from how to set the mood, how to prepare warm massage oil that will enhance the experience, to various massage techniques couples can apply on each other's body.
What makes this book unique is that author is daring. In addition to addressing the taboo of the importance of sexual intimacy that can be enhanced between the lovers by incorporating massage in their mind/body connection, author also incorporates interracial couples, which 40 years ago when the book was first created must have been a controversy. But the true beauty of the manual is the sensual pictures that depict many different couples practicing massage on each other. One thing is clear - they enjoy the sensual pleasure very much and they definitely enjoy each other and their bodies. They are completely absorbed into experience and they adore each other's touch.
Definite bonus of this manual and very colorful book is the DVDs that are enclosed in the latest edition. I think that every sex therapist should offer this book to any couple experiencing strain in their relationship. By simply implementing these techniques of love and undivided attention towards each other, couples can experience deep connection between each other.

A brilliant book! A lightly textured and beautifully designed cover is opened to reveal cleverly titled drink puns and darling sketches. Each introduction includes a short overview of the featured film, as well as descriptions of glassware, equipment, techniques and different types of alcohol. The drink-making instructions are detailed and there is even a short section on snacks and drinking games! We have yet to mix any of the drinks, but many - such as the Taxi Screw-Driver - look and sound delicious. This book is an excellent gift for any cinephile or cocktail enthusiast, and it is a fun companion to Tequila Mockingbird.

Must Have for Your Next Movie Night!

I bought Tim Federle's first book, Tequila Mockingbird, and I was thrilled to know there was another! I love books, music, and movies, so this book was right up my alley. I loved the comparisons to the movies and the nice little summaries how each cocktail relates to the film. This is a must have for a movie night with friends. I cannot wait to use this for the next party. Some of my favorites are Sloppy in Seattle, since Sleepless in Seattle on of my favorite movies. This is neat since it is divided into film genres and even food recipes. This book is simply fun to read and amazing to have for your collection!

About the Author

Galina Lindquist (1955-2008) was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University. She received her Ph.D. in 1998, and did fieldwork among neo-shamans in Sweden, among alternative healing practitioners and patients in Moscow, and among shamans and lamas in Tyva, Southern Siberia. She authored Conjuring Hope: Healing and Magic in Contemporary Russia (2006), The Quest for the Authentic Shaman: Multiple Meanings of Shamanism on a Siberian Journey (2006), co-edited four volumes, and published numerous articles in professional journals.
