About the Author
Prince Matila Costiesco Ghyka (1881-1965) was a Romanian mathematician, historian, philosopher, and diplomat, who served as the Plenipotentiary Minister in the United Kingdom during the late 1930s. He was also a visiting professor of aesthetics at the University of Southern California and at the Mary Washington College in Virginia. His previous books in English include "The Geometry of Art and Life" and an autobiography, "The World Mine Oyster". Though his prolific literary output includes fiction, poetry, and philosophy, the overarching concern of his work was a synthesis of higher mathematics and the arts.

In this extensively revised and updated third edition, the Nobel Prize–winning author maintains an excellent balance between theoretical and descriptive material, although the amount of descriptive chemistry has been decreased somewhat, and the presentation of the subject, especially in relation to the nonmetals, has been revised in such a way as to permit greater correlation with the electronic structure of atoms, especially electronegativity.
The principles of quantum mechanics are discussed on the basis of the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. The quantized energy levels of a particle in a box are derived by means of a simple assumption about the relation of the de Broglie waves to the walls of the box. No attempt is made to solve the Schrodinger wave equation for other systems, but the wave functions of hydrogen-like electrons are presented and discussed in some detail, and the quantum states for other systems are also covered. Statistical mechanics is introduced before thermodynamics, and the discussion of thermodynamics is based on it. This arrangement reflects the author's belief that beginning students can understand statistical mechanics better than chemical thermodynamics.

About the Author

Linus Pauling: Two-Time Nobel Laureate
In 1985 Dover reprinted Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry, a well-known older book by Linus Pauling and E. Bright Wilson. This book had been first published fifty years earlier and remarkably still found readers in 1985, and still does today, twenty-five years further on.

The first edition of Pauling's General Chemistry was a short book of less than 250 pages published in 1944, during World War II. Three years later, it had more than doubled in size to almost 600 pages, and the 1953 edition was over 700 pages. Fifteen years later, for the 1970 edition, it reached its final size and configuration at almost 1,000 pages ― and that is the edition which Dover reprinted in 1988. Dr. Pauling's one request at that time was that we keep the price affordable for students.

Linus Pauling is of course the only Dover author to win two Nobel prizes, for Chemistry in 1954 and for Peace in 1962; he is the only winner in history of two unshared Nobel Prizes.

The Best Undergraduate Text ever!

When Linus Pauling was teaching undergraduates at Caltech, he found that none of the existing undergrad texts would serve his purpose.So he decided to write his own. This was in the 1940's. The result, 'General Chemistry', even after more than 50 years, is one of the best introductions to chemistry at the University level that I know of. I discovered this book in my sophomore year and after that I couldn't put it down. If you really read this book thoroughly, you can probably say that you have an excellent grasp of most of the fundamental principles of chemistry. Pauling's masterly style of explaining the essentials without compromising on information is unmatched. The small, simple calculations that he illustrates in each chapter are enlightening. In addition, the book is lavishly illustrated with beautiful figures by Roger Hayward. Pauling has a special knack of bringing out the flavor of seemingly boring but important topics like thermochemistry and ionic equilibrium. If you want one book that will launch your chemical knowledge on the right trajectory, trust me and buy this one. You will be enlightened by it forever.

full of insight but eccentric

This is an interesting, if somewhat dated and eccentric textbook by the man who was probably the leading chemist of the twentieth century. It is full of interesting insight, and written with real flair, so much unlike the typical textbook today produced by the textbook publishing machines.

Let me give a couple of examples, good and bad, of what makes this book interesting, but also exasperating.

The book is the only freshman chemistry text I know of that has a derivation of the Boltzmann distribution P ~ e^(-E/kT), a very basic relation in the kinetic theory of gases and in fact in all of statistical physics. The derivation is simpler than most, which makes it a real jewel especially at this level, where most people would think it doesn't belong.

On the other hand, the section on chemical bonding, which is actually where Pauling made his reputation, is very eccentric, like the author, so much so that it makes the book unsuitable as the sole text for a course. It is all based on sp3 hybrid orbitals. As far as I can tell, sp2 and sp hybrids are never mentioned. With the sp3 story, Pauling is able to account surprisingly well for some systematics of bond lengths. Whether this is fortuitous or not, I don't know, but it is interesting. On the other hand, without sp2 and sp hybrids, he is completely unable to give the standard, very simple, beautiful account of bond angles. A student learning introductory chemistry from this text who then went into organic chemistry would soon be at a disadvantage without knowing the theory of hybrid orbitals that everyone else would get from any of the standard contemporary texts.

My recommendation: use this text as a very insightful, quirky supplement. The price is certainly right.

The text that comes closest, in my opinion, in seriousness, if not eccentricity, is the contemporary text by Oxtoby and coauthors. It is too highbrow though for most college introductory chemistry courses.

Despite its age, still a truly fine book.

Even though this is NOT the most up to date and technically correct text out there, it is still the best introduction to general chemistry I've seen which is why I rated it 5 stars (I refuse to dock it points for being old, unlike other reviews of other books I've seen). I found a copy at a garage sale, best four bucks I've spent in a while. The format of this book is superb, basing thermodynamics on his discussion of statistical mechanics and QM-he found it makes learning much more smooth, and I happen to agree. If someone would get permission to update this book and not much more, perfect general chem text for a college sequence. For those who'd like more physical and mathematical detail, the appendices are chock full of derivations, integrations and connections to make your heart swoon. Excellent book.

I am a Holistic Nutrition Student and this was a required book, When I received it, I was a bit intimidated by the Volume of Info. But, it is AMAZING! It is loaded full of all you really need to know about food and nutrition. Everything is well categorized and layout out for easy access. When you look up a food, it gives you nutrition breakdown, how to shop for, store, and cooking suggestions and recipes. Best nutrition book I have read by Far !!!

Excellent book~!!! One needs tot be dedicated to a drastic change in eating and eating habits. It is bigger than the Bible, over 800 pages! Super excellent advice on all healthy foods, how to buy, cook and store,nutritional breakdown. Emphasis on natural and organic fruits and vegetables.
It is definitely an healthy new way to live!!

Oh my gosh, what a find. It is uncanny that the detailed info in this 2007 book is what is put forth as the most advanced thought of today. As if all of today's current food science authors use this for their source book. More clearly written and absorbing too. A 100 healthiest foods list, an eating plan, and many health and nutrition secrets revealed. A good companion to the "How Not to Die" book by Michael Greger. How one person could write all this in one lifetime is beyond belief. This monster tome weighs in at almost 4.5 lbs (2 kg), so hope you get it free shipping or at most book rate.

Constance Plyd can't believe her husband, Jimmy, is dead. All she'd wanted him to do was sign the divorce papers but no, he put Tide in her dishwasher and then manages to get killed by a demon! Sheriff Nathan Garrett doesn't want to believe that Constance is responsible but she's the only witness to the murder. Is he letting his guilt over the past interfere with the investigation? Or is Constance's story true that a demon killed Jimmy and now the Devil intends to impregnate a ditzy virgin to bring about the birth of the Antichrist? Constance and Nathan will have their hands full as the situation is only going to get wackier....

Hilarious! Cara Lockwood had me laughing throughout EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY. From Jimmy's history of mishaps to the whole concept of a talking dog, the story is chock full of humor. Cara Lockwood keeps the tone upbeat, even as the world is crashing around Constance.

Constance is a great heroine. Her disbelief at the unbelievable events makes her all the more credible. I particularly love the distinguishing moniker of "Dead Jimmy" she uses for her now-deceased husband as it adds yet another bit of quirkiness to the tale. The romance between Constance and Nathan is sweet and builds over the course of the tale as both must learn to trust the other. EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY is a bit outrageous at times, but that is part of the fun. Easily recommended!

off-beat humorous yet action-packed thriller

Constance Plyd has been waiting for months to get her husband to sign the divorce papers; she believes this is the day she has prayed for. However, before that can happen, she finds Jimmy's dead body with a screwdriver protruding from his back. At the scene is the Pride demon Yeman who killed him. He gives her his card as he and Shadow the Gluton demon know she is the Chosen One as the prophet with visions that indicate who Lucifer is to have sex with in order to begat the Antichrist.

Sheriff Nathan Garret, who years ago had sex with Constance one day and left her the next, questions her. He finds her story unbelievable, which she can understand as so does Constance. In a vision she sees a small dog wearing a pink sweater who will help her. The canine Frank turns out to be an apprentice angel who belongs to movie star Dante London. The star is coming to town to film a movie. She is the vassal chosen to carry the Antichrist, but Frank and Constance wait for more of her visions to determine when and where the seduction will tale place so they can stop Lucifer from carrying out his plan.

Combining elements from urban fantasy, religion, and chick lit elements, Cara Lockwood creates an amusing lighthearted romp starring a non-believer who has visionary powers due to her matriarchal DNA. Constance always thought her mom Abigail was a fruitcake until she began to see the truth. It takes her a while to accept her skill, but once she does even Lucifer believes she is a force to be reckoned with. Readers will enjoy this off-beat humorous yet action-packed thriller as the strong cast knows that EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY even if it takes eternity for it to occur.

Amusing, but trying to hard

I have enjoyed several of Cara Lockwood's books and usually like the "fantasy" chick-lit (witches, etc), so it was a "no-brainer" to buy this book. Unfortunately, it didn't really meet my expectations. There are definitely some funny elements, but overall, I wasn't blown away. There were a bit too many sub-plots and I did not feel like the romance between the lead characters was compelling. I would definitely recommend Dixieland Sushi over this book.

About the Author
David Myers received his psychology Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him "outstanding professor."

His research and writings have been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, by a 2010 Honored Scientist award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, by a 2010 Award for Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology, by a 2013 Presidential Citation from APA Division 2, and by three dozen honorary doctorates.

With support from National Science Foundation grants, Myers' scientific articles have appeared in three dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in four dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

David Myers has chaired his city's Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology (see www.hearingloop.org). For his leadership, he received an American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award in 2011, and the Hearing Loss Association of America Walter T. Ridder Award in 2012.

He bikes to work year-round and plays daily pick-up basketball. David and Carol Myers have raised two sons and a daughter, and have one granddaughter to whom he dedicates the Third Edition of Psychology in Everyday Life.

This was a very easy to read textbook. It was just as entertaining as wikipedia surfing, which I found surprising. The in-book quizzes were more challenging than my actual exams - something I found to be super helpful.

About the Author
Edwin Harkness Spina is an award-winning author, speaker and mystic. His first book, Mystic Warrior, won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Visionary Fiction and a Nautilus Silver Book Award for Fiction/Visionary Fiction. (Deepak Chopra won the Nautilus Gold that year.)

Ed is also the author of The Future is Now and Escaping the Matrix, and a contributing author to the bestseller, 101 Great Ways to Improve Your Life (along with Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Joe Vitale, and others). He is also the developer of Energy Center Clearing and Total Love Immersion.

Prior to shifting his focus to writing and speaking, Ed was a venture capitalist, entrepreneur, software designer and business consultant. He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BSE from Tufts University.

Do Yourself a Favor and Place this Self-Help Book by a Sage Author on Your Reading List

"Mystic Secrets Revealed: 53 Keys to Spiritual Growth and Personal Development" is my first exposure to author Edwin Harkness Spina. That title aptly describes the contents of this self-help book.

"Traveling extensively throughout North America, South America and Asia, interacting with thousands of People," Spina learned and borrowed "various mystic principles, writing this book over a period of six years."

While I consider myself both open minded and clearly fallible, elsewhere, I have read and rejected several of the concepts set forth in Mystic Secrets Revealed; however, on the whole I did not find the concepts set forth in this book lacking in verisimilitude.

The author writes clearly and succinctly compressing helpful tips to live life to the fullest in a quick, concise yet thorough manner that is easy for the novice to comprehend. Key 37--"The Science of Intention," for example, postulates "what you put your attention on grows." Accordingly, we are advised to "observe our thoughts. When we catch ourselves thinking negative thoughts, we need to change them. So simple, yet so profound, this is the essence of the Science of Intention."

Edwin tackles a variety of pertinent subjects including dealing with stress, fear, anger, emotions, intimacy and behavior to name a handful.

An avid reader of self-help books, I really enjoyed this one. Spina's sage advice is invaluable. Do yourself a favor and put this one on your reading list.

Brilliant!

The author does an excellent job of distilling the whole idea of Oneness and becoming more spiritually aware into short, easy to understand chapters. I highly recommend this book.

Amazingly great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of this book, I've read other spiritual books that I had to read parts of it several times to understand what it was saying but not this book. Written in plain English with stories told to help understand concept, just a great read. Only wish his mediation technics were included. Will definitely read Mystic Warrior!
