I read it as a teen

As a 9th grader I truly hated reading....until i found this book. I could not put this book down. I shared passages on the bus home from school with my friends. As an educator I often tell my experience of how i fell in love with reading. There is a book for everybody. This is mine.

A shockingly great novel!

I purchased this book at a book sale for a scant 50 cents. I was actually the one selling the books, but as I arranged boxes and boxes of paperbacks this book caught my eye and I feel fortunate that I found it.

To be crystal clear, this book is not for the faint of heart. It contains some very graphic violence and situations in a wartime scenario. I am a big fan of military literature and I highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in the military or who wants a very thrilling book.
The premise of the book is pretty exciting; a team of the best fighting men the world has to offer go on a secret mission deep within enemy territory. The action is so fast and furious that it beats just about every action movie I've ever seen.
The characters are quite likable and I found myself attached to them as they made their way through treacherous situations and began to mold into a highly effective squad. This is a novel about war, unfiltered and objective. The writing is matter-of-fact at first, but as the soldiers begin to rely on each other more and more everything from their marching to their actions in combat border on the poetic. This novel was both frightening and enthralling, and I absolutely couldn't put it down.

I have done a bit of research on the events in this story, as many have in the past, and found it to be mainly fiction. A mission of this sort probably didn't take place, but that doesn't change the gravity of the novel. If you're looking to join the military, you should probably read this. It's fiction, but I feel that it offers a good perspective on war and keeps the reader very entertained.

The story is told by New Zealand Special Air Service Warrant Officer Gayle Rivers, a tough combat veteran who is seconded to a top secret mission organized by the US. Seven special forces soldiers, from the US, New Zealand, Britain, and Korea, are launched through Laos and into southern China in time for a secret meeting, at which they will kill the key Communist officials running the Vietnam War.

The story narrates their preparations, the long walk across Laos, and their arrival in Southern China. The combat action is almost continuous, as the small group fights its way through various insurgent and Communist ambushes. What they hadn't counted on was a betrayal at their objective, or how hard it might be to get home...

"The Five Fingers" is highly recommended as an engrossing novel of Vietnam-era combat.

Mysterious figures and events of the Bible.

Authors, Lionel and Patrician Fanthorpe, are researchers who can never be accused of non objectivity. They apply their inexhaustible mental and physical energy into digging and delving and extracting every last atom of evidence pertaining to anything they investigate with a view to writing about it. Their attentions to the Bible have not proved to be exceptions to the rule.
No matter what 'reading' may be applied to the Bible, whether by a believer in its literal sense as the Word of God, or by a curious seeker of the content of ancient writings, the Book contains a liberal serving of mystery and puzzlement.
Most of us once owned a tiny toy boat with a lid on: to and from which we patiently offloaded and onloaded dinky animals; usually in pairs -- or at least they were until some of them inevitably disappeared under the settee. Anyone, believer or unbeliever, who has read the story of Noah's Ark knows of how the hero, Noah, built a vessel upon the command of, and according to the specifications of, God, in order to protect his family and all animal species from the wrath of the Flood. Most of us tend not to consider the fate of the Ark thereafter. Not so the Fanthorpes. They have identified at least two possible locations for its final 'docking', as well as witnesses who have attested to its petrified or frozen remains still existing -- and with dimensions eerily close to those stated in the Biblical account of its construction.
Moses, the leader of the Israelites: was his encounter with the burning bush a confrontation with a manipulative, devious god intent on proving that the Pharaoh could be cruelly outsmarted, or with a beneficent being who conversed with him about the wisdom of avoiding ensuing tragedies?
What were those incredible stones, the Urim and Thummim, entrusted to the mysterious Hermes Trismegistus: he who became identified by the ancient Egyptians as the scribe, Thoth?
Did the progeny of the passionate affair between Solomon and Sheba remove the Ark of the Covenant from his father's keeping? What was the source of its ancient power; and where is it now?
These and many other puzzles posed between the pages of the Bible are examined in depth, with neither complacency nor bias, by the tireless Fanthorpes. Their book is a treasure which makes one very inclined indeed to get that battered old Bible out and read it again in the light of their elucidating deductions. Their excellent work is never easy to put down, but if you can do so just long enough to locate your bible, reading the two, one alongside the other, in cross reference, is recommended.

Extremely Misleading

I found this book mildly entertaining but overall extremely misleading and not at all what I thought it might be. Luckily, I only paid four dollars for it. It's going in the recycling bin.

The description in the back of the book claims that "All these intriguing questions, and many more, are answered in Mysteries of the Bible." But the reality is that this book is short on answers and extremely long on speculation. And when I say speculation, I don't just mean your regular run of the mill academic speculation, limited to rational or biblically supernatural explanations. Oh, no. These authors throw everything from extraterrestrials to radio transmitters and nuclear bombs (yes, could it be that Sodom and Gomorrah were actually destroyed by a nuclear explosion? GASP!) at the mysteries that defy explanation, which is most of them. In fact, I think the only mystery that was biblically explained, and quite satisfactorily, was The Mysterious Power of Prayer.

I was beginning to enjoy some of the book, thinking that though extremely quirky, at the very least I got a few chuckles out of it, and I thought their research might be thorough for what it was, but the warm fuzzy feeling disappeared when, to my horror, in trying to explain what the Urim and Thummim could be they resorted to stating as if it were some sort of plausible lead "Smith also reported that these mysterious engraved gold tablets were in a language which he called 'reformed Egyptian.' All of which, strange as it sounds, may have more than a few strands of amazing truth in it." Unfortunately what the authors failed to clarify is that Joseph Smith Jr. has been thoroughly proven to be a charlatan of the first order, who was unable to decipher any sort of Egyptian writing at all and when given the opportunity proceeded to produce a number of "translations" that were eventually proven to be utter gibberish. Moreover, they fail to mention that the so-called gold plates that Smith claimed to have translated were supposedly given back to the angel who first offered them for Smith to translate and therefore there were never any witnesses to any plates ever having existed at all, and therefore no possible way of ever corroborating whether these non-existent gold tablets could have been the Urim and Thummim anyhow. Why would these authors knowingly follow a lead and not clarify these details but leave this as a valid possibility for consideration? How many other of their possible clues, aside from the ubiquitous and obvious "extraterrestrials" and their "technologies" are completely lacking in credibility in this book? Their bibliography is certainly dismally short, and six of the sources cited are their very own previous publications.

At the very least this thing is published under the wrong rubric, and should have been published as science fiction.

Finally, I am deeply resentful that this thing received public funding from the Canada Council for the Arts. I cannot believe how my government chooses to waste my hard-earned tax dollars.

About the Author

Mark D. West is the Nippon Life Professor of Law, director of the Center for Japanese Studies, and director of the Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Law in Everyday Japan: Sex, Sumo, Suicide, and Statutes, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

Not as racy as you might think, but fun for an academic book

The cover of this book is a bit of a tease. What lies within is not a breezy bit of titillation, but a footnote-rich book about comparative law. It's not a fast read -- quite the opposite (unless your sensibility has been warped by the grotesque literary standards of American legal scholarship, in which case this book reads like a romance novel). In case you're wondering, the "sex" chapter takes up only about 15% of the main text, and includes the relatively humdrum topic of divorce. So cool down.

Within the parameters the author has chosen for the book -- a comparison of Japanese and US attitudes towards what constitutes a scandal, what types of social and legal redress (group discipline, defamation law, etc.) are avaliable against an allegation of a scandal, how protagonists are punished (or not), and how to apologize -- it is terrific. The emphasis is on Japan, with US mainly as a foil to highlight the Japanese point of view. And that point of view can be quite surprising for a Westerner. E.g., West compares the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal with a 1989 scandal involving then-Prime Minister Uno Sousuke and a mistress. The public turned against Uno, who was forced to resign. But it wasn't because he had an affair. Rather, the trouble came after the mistress revealved that Uno gave her only $3,000/month support (much of which he consumed by eating meals at her house most nights) -- Uno was too cheap.

The book describes literally dozens of scandals involving corporations, entertainers, athletes, politicians and ordinary citizens. The emphasis is on the past 20 years or so (Heisei Emperor's era); in fact many of the scandals are from 2000-2005. An impressive feature of the book is that West actually interviewed many of the scandal protagonists or their friends or colleagues, as well as Japanese journalists. You'll learn a lot about the infrastructure of the Japanese media, including talent agencies and press clubs, and the book provides many serious insights into the nature and extent of press freedom in Japan. But while the author tries to maintain an entertaining tone throughout, this is pretty much impossible in those parts of the book that describe US or Japanese law rather than facts of actual cases. And although most of his cultural observations are pretty acute, occasionally they're slightly off. E.g., he glosses 'enka' as "Japanese folk song", but in modern times it's more like very commercial country music on a stock theme (such as hey bartender, or I miss dear old mom, or I'm glad I'm a fisherman), punctuated with cheesy electric guitar riffs. The author also makes a religious cult or two sound more benign than they really are.

Here are a couple of caveats that might limit the appeal of this book to a wide readership, and that might help you to calibrate my review: First, most of the first couple of chapters focuses on law, so it may take more than 100 pages before the mood lightens somewhat for the average reader. I'm a lawyer myself, and even for me some patches in these chapters were a bit of a slog. Second, although you can learn a lot about Japanese society from the book, you may be overwhelmed with detail if you don't already know anything about it. If you've never browsed even for a couple of minutes in a Japanese newsstand or never channel-surfed Japanese TV, you will need a very powerful imagination to follow the action in this book. There are tons of knowledgeable references to Japanese TV show formats, actors, actresses and MCs, to different categories of magazines and to such institutions as "gurabia" (gravure) models, as well as to various business and political scandals that were headline news in the past 5 years. I've been visiting Japan often during the past 10+ years, and now live there much of the time, but even I had to run to a search engine to look up photos of entertainers whose names were meaningless to me. If you're relatively new to Japan, prepare either for information overload or for a lot of online research into pop culture and recent history. But if you have some familiarity with the Japanese scene, and if you believe that even a book with footnotes can be fun, then this book is a great choice.

David Chappell BA(Hons Arch), MA(Arch), MA(Law), PhD, RIBA has 50 years of experience in the construction industry. David has worked as an architect in the public and private sectors, as a contracts administrator, as a lecturer in construction law and contracts procedure and as a construction contracts consultant. He was Professor of Architectural Practice and Management Research at The Queen’s University of Belfast and Visiting Professor of Practice Management and Law at the University of Central England in Birmingham. The
author of many books for the construction industry, he is Director of David Chappell Consultancy Limited, is a specialist advisor to the RIBA and RSUA and regularly acts as an adjudicator.

About the Author
Professor Ron Fulle is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego where he received a BS in Mathematics, and he holds a MS in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has over twenty-five years of industry experience and is currently teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology in the Telecommunications Engineering Technology program.

Poorly Written and Biased

I read this book while preparing for a paper. The chapter contents looked promising, but as I delved into the chapters I found the book scholarly inadequate, biased, and somewhat condescending. I recommend the latest edition of Digital Crossroads as a better book for use in academia.
